What happened to this tire?

Crazy wheelspin on something, though don't the cars in question have traction control?

Makes me wonder if something was wedged into the wheel well (accidentally?) and driven a while...

+1

My 04 S60 had a common issue where only the passenger tire would rub the inner fender. This was using OEM wheels, stock ride height and stock tire size.

I'm going to go with a slightly different idea than just mere wheel spin because I've seen something similar to this before. I'm going to guess that she ran over something, and that "something" became lodged in the wheel well. She didn't get stopped before it ground a grove in the tire.

Thats possible, I didnt think of that. Yeah, factoring in traction control this is likely. Too bad they didnt know to look in the fender well for damage. There would have to be some markings or something where it was wedged in there.

That makes a lot of sense. Thing about it that way, i could envison even a piece of tree limb getting up into the fender well.

I like this theory too, it goes well with this one -

You know someone did something stupid.

Dumb question: how'd she notice? "Most" drivers don't bother looking at the dashboard let alone their tires.

Methinks she let an offspring use a vehicle, "let" or they "took", got caught doing a burnout, and is trying to get back to square one. Offspring, spouse, who knows. Maybe they intentionally did a burnout on the front lawn after a fun round of family feud. Anyhow, she's trying to get this fixed at someone else's expense.

Pure speculation on my part, with zero evidence.

No to both, factory ride height and wheels.

Ah, then I'd say definitely either they were spinning the tire on top of something sharp or perhaps something got picked up into the wheel well, and wedged in place while the tire turned against it.

Either that, or perhaps there was a suspension issue and the tire somehow ended up much higher than it is now. Are any of the currently installed suspension components brand new, or look newer than the other 3 corners?

Could have been, vehicle is long gone. Once the crazy cat lady started yelling at me in a strange language I lost interest. Like I said I have to babysit the tire until someone in a high pay grade decides what I have to do with it. I took the pics to see if anyone had any ideas on this. The lady claimed she was "just driving normally and it did that on its own."

It's a lie ! It is clearly not a manufacture defect.

Your dealer just lost the cost of a tire to a lying customer

It is the "yelp effect" in action. If you don't immediately kowtow and give in to someone's demands, they threaten to go on yelp and absolutely destroy the dealer.

I'm all for taking care of customers that are reasonable, but there are people that take it too far and ruin it for everyone.

There have been some cases where businesses have sued the bad reviewer for defamation and won. When they make up bad reviews that aren't legitimate. If I have a nice customer wanting something I'm much more likely to help them when they're friendly. Last resort with an a-hole is calling the police to have them removed and possibly arrested for disorderly conduct.
