Noises. What do they mean?

*in general. The Volvo is fine. So please, don't [censored]-u-me.

Like rattles that quickly go away, etc.

Have at it.

(Cold startups in like 10 seconds or so) ?

could be lifters, but probably something like an idler pulley, an exhaust heat shield, etc. I heard and like to repeat that high pitched noises are usually no big deal but heavy knocks and clunks should be looked into.

You're missing a running joke that GHT's car will eventually implode from timing belt use past its expiration date.

Naturally, since he'll stop getting attention when he actually fixes the belt, this may continue for months.

A flaw, as you noted, is if someone finds this thread in five years and misses the whole joke and takes the advice as seriously as its deadpan delivery style.

Thought you said you have a clean record? Hmmmm interesting.

I think you need to reanalyze your situation, get your priorities straight, and grow up a little bit.

Except that it is no joke, and if he cant afford the TB, no way he will afford the valve and piston work when it fails.

All this smartphone, kreen, auto-rx, battery charger stuff is just sad.

His self admission is that there is a problem saving money.

And didnt we see that he was buying car parts on food stamp EBT?

Im going to feel bad for the guy when the car fails majorly, but it wasnt like it was without warning.

Sad.

It still cost $150 to dismiss the thing. $$$$

^^^...

..... Well, sure, we have been getting a good laugh out of it. I figured out how to enjoy the car.. but for all my tuning up stupid stuff, like fuel cleaners, and the like, the only "repair" being the CTS and the brakes) the T-belt remains untouched. So, that brings up something I would like to discuss...

... If I am hearing everyone correctly, I should take this timing belt thing more seriously and bring it up in discussion with my ladyfriend that it is something we NEED to do, ? Am I hearing everyone correctly?

The car didn't implode yet.

Assume that I can *maybe* persuade us to leave this present path...

It's not "looking for attention" it is that "We have a car now and we use it every day." Literally. Every. Single. Day.

I WILL say that the $616 quote, at the dealer for T-belt change.. IS of interest, and MAY be possible to sell to my roomie, since we can get a loaner car out of the deal.

?

Also, back OT: I am hearing that this sound can be heard by as simple as "low oil?"... ?

Want me to post a video of it?

*tomorrow... (of the startup, new as of three starts. Sound is key.)

The sound of it will help determine.

And, please see above post.. Should that be a sign to get the car to a shop like SOON? (IF it is...) <-- for Timing belt..

Hey JHZR2, can we rename this thread "Timing belt?"

.. I miight be able to get out of this some impetus to get my ladyfriend to agree to come off some of this money, sooner rather than later...

I also need to point out that there is a *chance* she will get approved for a credit card this week.........

So, let me repost, to address this issue, as these are my present thoughts:

GHT, in all these weeks, months and posts have you ever removed the inspection cover to look at the belt ?

Simple answer, yes or no !

No.

^(that is what I originally typed. My wording just got called out, accusatorily. So I changed it back. Please read below, though.)

Now, something you should be aware of: This week, I made inquiry as to what size bolts those weird screws are. it turns out that I will need a Torx #27 to remove that cover. (Since I realized that I really should have done something with it by now, ..)

That means, that.. Had I kept my present course, i would be buying a Torx #27 cover.

The next time daylight comes up, I will snap some pics of the serpentine-looking belt. Since we are putting it all out there.

GHT,
Did you really think that those telling you to get the timing belt service done at once were just hating on you?
I think you've gotten a good Volvo.
Nothing seriously wrong with it and you paid a steal of a price for it.
You've put some miles on the car now and you've resolved a couple of minor problems.
This should tell you that the Volvo is a good car, contrary to what a couple of naysayers have posted, and it should last for a good while.
When (not if) the timing belt fails, the engine will be instant toast.
If I were you and your lady friend, the first thing going on that new plastic would be $616.00 for timing belt service.
If the new plastic doesn't work out, I'd beg, borrow or steal the money.
You've been lucky so far, but it's never wise to push your luck.
I've encouraged you in past threads.
I'd hate to see this nice car have its life ended by something as silly and as predictable as a timing belt.
I know that money is a concern, but where would you be without the car?

I wanted him to read about WHY the answer was No. It turns out, it is a Torx #27 socket.

Are you suggesting I have removed the cover??

That Citi Expedia card sure would make it easier. However.. Yes, I feel more inclined to try to lobby for its repair, even if it is at the dealer with a loaner, and they do literally ONLY the T-belt.

I will post a vid tomorrow A.M. so the board can ee what I am dealing with, since it seems like it will do so again, no matter how much I want to believe that changing the oil will make it stop.
