I'm going to suggest an equal-i-zer hitch. Its the hitch i run on the avalanche when i tow my travel trailer. The advantage of WD hitches are much better handling and reduced trailer sway around 18 wheelers. Braking is so much better with a WD hitch.

They are not cheap, but in my opinion they are one of the safest. Bought mine in 2005 , no problems what so ever. They are heavy, but fairly easy to hook up. You might need to watch some videos to get the initial setup correct. If you buy from a dealer or TT dealer they will set it up and ajust it for your truck/trailer height.

I would call up etrailer.com and talk to them about what you are trying to accomplish. They have a ton of different options and can usually suggest something that will work great with your particular setup. When I've worked with them they haven't done any high pressure sales pitches or anything. Just call them up and say you are in the starting stages of getting a WD setup and see what they recommend.

I would highly recommend getting a WD system that can be upfit with an anti-sway system as well. The initial install is a little more work but after that it hooks up just the same.

Here is what I run pulling a 25' enclosed trailer with my F150. No issues traveling 70mph with a 20mph crosswind. Equal-i-zer. Best 500 I've ever spent on camping. 9800# TT here.
Basically, the solid bar connection between trailer and tow mule keeps sway in check.
The chain connection on the bar type allows some flex, and there will always be some movement. I had a Reese. Horrible.
I used to fight my TT, arriving white knuckled and worn out. Semi's passing were always an exercise in survival. No more...Equal-i-zer makes it very well behaved.

Hi all,

Thanks for the tips on which other models to buy, I will take those under advisement. However that is not at all what I am asking for in this post. I am asking about the advantages / disadvantages between the two styles ("round bar" vs "trunnion") of the two models I posted.

As others have stated-the Equalizer Hitch is the most popular WD hitch on the market.
 
+4 or 5 for the Equalizer hitch. We tow a 9900 lb Open Range LT272RLS behind a Max Tow F150 and the hitch is a solid piece of kit. Super easy to hook up and very stable. Went from near towing to having almost 4k miles on the whole thing and it's solid as a rock.

IMHO the hitch is one of the most important things you will buy - buy the best.

I have all this but thanks. My question is no more onerous than the numerous questions about "what viscosity oil to use in my car" which is also available from the manufacturer or the owner's manual. I am looking for a quick explanation from someone who knows the answer on an automotive site in a general forum section.
