Wasted a gallon of PYB. Learned a lesson.

2. You either need to get a new boss or reassess your on-call relationship. Just curious, would you have (a) jumped out of the shower, (b) gotten up off of the commode (c) jumped out of bed during sex?

Care to find me another 6 figure job, that allows me to work from home and travel only 3-4 times a year?

I see what you did now. You did it while "working." no wonder you had to jump to get that call.
That would probably apply to the scenarios A-C.

If you actually read my post.. it's was 8pm. But I was on-call. Meaning, I can do whatever, but need to answer their call if there's a problem. But yeah, there are perks to working from home, like going to my kids games/school events, doctor's appointment, etc without having to file for a leave. I can drop by Walmart middle of the day to buy PYB. ;-)
Then there are drawbacks. Such as working until 4-5am when there are issues.
I'm salaried, not hourly. I have a great job. But then I worked 20+ years to get to this position/role.

I remember opening a thread here for a small leak after an oil change on my '08 Sonata. I also had the habit of reusing washers.

First (and good) advice was to try to tighten the plug a bit more. It worked. I put a new washer at the next OC.

These aluminum crush washers do just that, they crush after being used and the plug needs more torque to keep tight.

When I worked at Bingham Toyota, we'd torque the crush washers using a standard length Snap-on 14mm combination wrench. And being that the wrench was as thin as a butter knife, when our fingers started to hurt, we knew we were at the right torque.

I'd be most upset over the time to do the job twice, plus now cleanup time due to a messy change, over the "waste" of the the oil.

Then again there was just a post a few days back about some guy who was saying he wanted to drain and save his conv. oil in order to put in winter oil, then put the half-used oil back in for spring. His reasoning was to save the oil.

Life is short. When you're on your deathbed you'll rue all the time lost to compulsive behaviors.

That didn't really answer the question and if you are worth the 6 figures you should be able, in time, to find one that treats you better.

I never said he doesn't treat me good. In fact he's the best boss I ever had. Like I said, he never calls unless there is an emergency. And it was an emergency.

Piece of advise for the young ones. In a corporate world, perception is important. It doesn't matter(maybe, less important) whether you fix an issue that minute, hours later, or a day later. What is important is management/boss knows you are/someone is on it. Those who don't respond quick, usually find themselves passed-over for promotions or worst let go.

Some might say, "eh that's too much. When it's after 5pm, it's my time." Or "I'm salaried, I don't get paid overtime". Now look at the tech/IT field. What ethnicity is usually there? Asians and Indians! Guess what? They don't work only 9 to 5. Americans needs to change. It's only a matter of time when majority of CIO/VPs are Asian/Indians. When that happens, they will tend to hire Asian/Indians.

LOL. Welcome to BITOG where our membership truly reflects a cross section of OCD nut jobs. From the compassionate to the jerks, we have them all!

You've learned the important lesson of exposing your soft under belly and how it can turn on you. With one light hearted admission of being human, you opened up the never ending debate about crush washers AND fell for the troll bait to justify your career responsibilities. Be warned, never ever discuss your financial practices. You will be judged immediately and put on the rack, drawn and quartered. Rough bunch here.

Anyone, pro or amateur, that "does stuff" makes guffaws on occasion. Chock it up to experience and move on. Regarding careers, anyone that is successful knows that it goes beyond the 9 - 5 routine and there is give and take on all aspects. Don't engage with the trolls!

Thanks for sharing your story. I got a chuckle out of it as I pictured the frantic grab for the phone with oily hands. It's a good reminder to keep on our toes and may keep some of us from doing the same (or not).

Take care.

The following is an unprofessional opinion.

While I would never dream of re using a copper washer on a banjo fitting on a brake caliper, I re use copper washers for oil drain plugs all the time. I have a copper drain plug washer on our 2001 Mazda which has been on there over 260,000 miles and it doesn't leak a drop. It has never backed out either. It has gotten a bit thinner over the years though. It might be about time to replace it. Plastic and aluminum washers, I would replace more often, if not every oil change.

Thanks for the tips. Yep!, I've been an On & off lurker here for years.. mostly, only browsing if I have some issue/questions about my vehicle. I have only registered recently. Now, I learned there are many trolls here. I'm still waiting for trolls to find me another good job. Guess, I shouldn't hold my breath. Trolls will just find/invent anything negative about anyone... Like assuming I have the worst boss... whereas it's the farthest from the truth.

As for the other that said "let's not go racial". Nothing racial about my post. Being in IT, I can see it first hand... Jobs going overseas, and if not outsourced, they import them from other countries, and give them work visas.

Anyways, back to original topic.
I did check the washer before reusing it. The plug indexed okay with the original "blue paint" the manufacturer put there (as usual). I have torqued it.. I have tight it a "bit" more after being torqued. Yet it still leaked. So, rather than risking stripping the threads, I just opted to replace the washer.

Days later, no leak. not a single drop. I'm running QSGB for now... On OEM(Hyundai) filter.

As for another topic kinda related to this... I have cut open the previous filter. Purolator PL14459. I will post the pics in the oil filter section.

Interesting story... I tossed the original washer from every vehicle I've owned and have never used one. Never had any leaks from a properly tightened bolt... And I usually break it loose with very little force because I see no reason to tighten it like crazy, same goes for the oil filter.

So last week I did my regular OCI for my car. I filled it with PYB 5w-20. Started it, no leaks. For days later, I would see drops of oil in the garage before I park in. I would clean it up, then park the car again. Next morning, no new drops. I would start the car again, leave. When I come back, I will see drops of oil again. So it appears that it start to leak/drip when I warm-up the car. The cause, a bad crush washer. I'm guessing the oil gets thin enough when warmed to pass thru the crush washer. The plug is torqued properly, so I didn't want to tighten it more.

I tried to replace the washer and not wasting as much oil as possible, by holding it with my finger/thumb... while one hand trying to remove & replace the washer off the bolt. That's when disaster struck. Phone rang. It's my boss. He doesn't call at 8pm unless there is an emergency at work. So I had no choice but let the days old PYB go drain. Yes, I know I could have put back the bolt in, but I didn't think about it at the time.

I guess after 3-4 years, it's about time to replace the washer. The worst part is, I always keep 3-4 spares of the washer. So it's not that I don't have any choice but re-use... I just got used to that it's fine to re-use, and never leaks. Plus the attitude of "why replace it, it's still working".

So there, I wasted a gallon of perfectly good PYB... by trying to save few cents worth of washer. sigh.

Little truck for future reference. Have someone hold a shop vac hose where the oil fill cap goes remove cap and stick vacuum hose in the fill hole and then remove the plug with the vacuum running you'll lose hardly any oil if any. I've done this a couple time when people come in with a drain plug leaking but have recently had their oil changed somewhere else

I've owned two Nissan's with the copper crush washer, never once had one drip after and oil change. Never changed the washer, just snugged the plug real good. The VW recommends I think a drain plug change every change or every other change. I changed the oil in the car 3 times (and who knows how many times before I bought it) using the same plug with no leaks. On the fourth I did change it for grins and giggles, but saved the old one. No sense in throwing it away since it wasn't leaking.

Wait, VW recommends you completely replace the entire drain plug EACH oil change?!?! What is that thing made of?! Goodness gracious. Do they consider that a wear item that needs replacement THAT often? Unbelievable.

Hah, yea. To think I bought this thing to be more economical than my truck... The VW oil change kits you can buy at the various online German tuner/autoparts stores include a new plug. I'm going to see how many changes I can get out of it to see if it's all baloney or not. It's a $3 part though, but kinda out there. Now the Ford and Chevy in the stable both have rubber seals that I wish the VW had...

My 3 Fords ranging from 1996-2005 have a nylon type gasket as part of the drain plug. I did have to purchase a new drain plug for the wife's 2005 Explorer because she was taking it to the dealer during her 75,000 mile extended warranty and they damaged the threads on the plug. Bought a new one and all is well. The new Ford drain plug cost around $6. I've been changing the oil ever since then.

Whimsey

Once in a while I'll buy a Toyota OEM filter to get the free drain plug gasket. Since I change the oil on the yota truck twice a year I say it's really good insurance. On the chev truck inset rubber gasket...still the original one. On the Jeep GC 4.0L with the outer intergrated rubber gasket on the plug...gotta replace that.
