Because they know you can easily see the pleat spacing, before and after use, and can also see whether the media tears. Outside of BITOG types, very few users of canister ("spin-on") filters have a clue, even those who change their own oil.

True, but most people here are too young to remember old-style cartridges, or have short memories.

That said, the new cartridges are significantly different from the old ones.
