The USDA Food Pyramid is now . USDA My Plate.

All I can say is "Wow!" How come no one could have come up with the idea of a food plate?

Why Pyramid; when was the last time anyone ate a pyramid of food?

This is a major step in the right direction. It shows that all foods are equal and it is their proportion and overall size matters.

LOL. I wrote that and then it hit me. I have seen people eating pyramids of food in buffets.

In this thread, I like the looks of the pyramid better. Though the plate makes more sense if you want to get all healthy on us.

I agree that it makes more sense to see the proper portions on a plate instead of a pyramid, especially since a majority of meals are eaten off of plates. It makes it visually easier to select portions.

What I need to know, though, is how you figure out what to eat at Taco Bell based on the plate? lol

Agree that the plate concept is obviously superior.

But are the recommended proportions really based on sound nutritional science or the political clout of the producers and nanny groups ?

Do adults really need dairy? Or is their place at the plate earned by political organization?

Call me a skeptic.

Somehow I doubt It's worth the 2 million dollars it cost to produce!

The ORIGINAL food pyramid from the 70s made sense. The foods you should eat the most of were at the base, and the ones you should eat in moderation were toward the top.

Then they modernized the food pyramid a few years ago and just made it stupid.

+2 unless you're really active. I mostly control weight through a very low carb diet.

I agree. Lots of simple and complex carbs/sugars are recommended.

I also dont think that "low carb" is an excuse for eat as much meat (of any color) as you wish...

Nope, you don't need to eat a ton of meat or a ton of anything. A good blend of meat, vegetables and other healthy fats is caloricaly dense enough that I find I can't eat nearly as much of anything as I used to. Plus, eating a ton of meat at every meal gets boring really fast. I find that the more I do this the more a healthy yet low carb diet is more and more appealing.

I also find that I am seeing how much temptation there is to eat for fun or to avoid boredom. I'm really becoming aware of this.

Many Americans already look like pyramids.
