Updated EPA #'s-very interesting.

I used to consider the EPA numbers to be the mileage I'd get if I drove reasonably sanely. I'll just have to adjust my perception of them to be the numbers I'd get if I drove without caring about fuel economy. The old ratings on my Pathfinder are 16/18. The new ones are 14/16. I've averaged 19. The old ratings on my Mazda3 are 25/32, and now they're 22/29. I've averaged 30.

I have always had good luck with the current EPA ratings, occasionally I best them. The new circuit must assume that everyone drives like wastefull idiots.

I average 28.

I think the EPA is trying to make mileage look worse as a way to encourage people to buy more efficient vehicles.

Or maybe they're thinking that all gasoline will be 10% ethanol soon!

I have a Mazda3 with the 2.0L engine - I manage pretty consistently 38 on the highway, between 24-28 in the city depending on the time of year (cold temperatures really screw the city #'s in the winter!).

This is compared to the EPA old numbers (28/35) and the new numbers (24/32).

It nailed mine spot on, 1992 Daytona. They quote 20mpg city, and thats EXACTLY what I get.
I thought she was running inefficiently, now I see for being 185K old, she's doin pretty well.

They also nailed the highway mileage to. I noticed when I drove out to my ex girlfriends place(loooong stretch of constant highway speed) I averaged a higher mileage at about 25mpg. That is what they quoted on that to.

Least I don't feel bad anymore.

I've had little problems getting the old EPA #s even on 10% ethanol. It's all in how you hold "that" foot.

I echo this. I have a tC and drive approx 75% highway and 25% around town and have averaged 27.3 MPG in 14986 miles.

On to the 1994 Geo Prizm with the 1.6L engine and five speed transaxle.

EPA says:

Old: Highway 34, City 27, Combined 29
New: Highway 31, City 23, Combined 26

They note: Additional Vehicle Characteristics: Front-wheel drive , (FFS)

Combined MPG estimates are based on 45% highway and 55% city driving

My driving is probably 75% highway and I have averaged 31.8 MPG for the 98K miles I've owned this car from 106K to 204K miles.

My TCO has just dropped below $0.130 / mile to 0.129

my 95 bmw 525i averages 23-24. old epa was 18/25. I usually get 28-30 on the highway. very happy with economy for such a heavy car with a small engine.

EPA testing was always more favorable to small 4 cyl type cars by testing at 55mph whereas most people drive 65-75 mph.
4 cyls usually got worse real world mileage than epa rated and V8s usually got better real world mileage because the v8 was chugging along just over idle at 75 whereas the little 4 banger was at 4k rpms. My toyota supra got 16 mpg avg where my 00 6spd Trans am got 28 mpg on the same 100 mile hwy commute.
Last summer I had 6 rent a cars for 1 week each while working at a site. Mustang,500,town car, subaru forester, camry, taurus. Every car got 21 mpg doing the same drive every day according to the built in computer. That is real world mileage. Yes I drive hard.

EPA revised their ratings because they wanted to take into account the reality (compared with 30 years ago) of people driving on congested freeways, sometimes stopped in traffic, and always tapping on the brakes to trim their speed to the traffic conditions.

Exactly... we surpass the old EPA ratings in all 9 or our cars, without any problem and with oxygenated gas. Most of the vehicles are over 100k (all but 2), and most are over 150k. We log every tank meticulously, and have nearly 30 years worth of data amongst 4 of us.

The only vehicle that we have a rmote problem with is my S10 ZR2, and that is because EPA tested a standard 4x4 S10, and mine has a widened frame and 31" tires (all from the factory though), which stands to reason that economy would be lowered. I still get 21 on the highway most of the time, and 19 in mixed driving.

It is all in how you handle that foot... and even then, its how you handle your vehicle. Roads in NJ arent very friendly to poky folks or slow mergers.

then why is my saab rated 34 MPG on the highway and I get on average for highway only tanks 37.6???

2.0L 4-cyl...

Is it because a turbo is effectively a 6-cyl car (Ive read this to be the claim, not sure if I believe it though)???

Thanks,

01 Maxima 5 Spd. Old mileage was 22/27, updated to be 19/25. I average 25 combined with 10% ethanol fuel.

My 94 Safari went from 16 city, 21 highway (18 combined) to 15 city 20 highway (16 combined). The new rating seems a bit closer to reality.
