Decided to try Penzoil Platinum 10w30 in my LS3 powered 2010 Camaro SS. Engine has aftermarket cam, valvetrain, cold air intake, long tube headers, no cats, 3inch x-piped Magnaflow exhaust, host of suspension pieces, dyno tuned, makes a bit more power than the factory 426hp rating, now somewhere between 550-560hp.

It's a daily driven car, about 32 miles round trip.

Did a day of dyno tuning, a dozen 1/8-mile runs, and an all-day 1/2-mile event. This is the first full OI with new valve springs/retainers/locators/seals/roller rockers. I'm thinking the extra aluminum might be the aftermarket steel spring locators rotating on the head, where the OEM are integral seal and locator and probably don't rotate at all. Just an idea, but I'm going to keep an eye out for anything unusual.

Either way, I'm thinking this is a pretty decent oil considering mileage interval and extracurricular use of the car. The GM OLM was at 29% for this sample.

Are you sure that isn't Ultra? High boron, great TBN. Looks excellent either way. How could it be so much better than Edge??? Maybe it just needed to be slightly thicker..lol But that is excellent.

Still think you have Ultra there

You're crazy, i sure wouldn't be running the oil that long, esp with the mods and driving conditions it saw. You got some brass cojonies.

x2. That is a whole lot of calcium.

Now that you've seen this UOA though, wouldn't you agree that this interval is safe? Perhaps before seeing the UOA I might have recommended a shorter interval, but not now.

And I agree with the people saying this looks like Ultra, as PP has nowhere near that much boron. It's definitely Ultra.

I have to agree, this report surprised me after having seen the mod list and the driving conditions.

I still wouldn't have ran it that far, esp having cracked the engine to install parts. A "flush" OCI is a must since the new parts are breaking in.

The TBN seems off as well. When did the OP add the makeup oil?

Keeraap, yes, very astute there 04SE, it's *Ultra* not Platinum. I've just put in Platinum...since I can NOT find any more ULTRA! Hear that Penzoil?! Listening?!?! SHeesh, all that Ultra advertising on TV and I've found it only once...now how do I edit a thread title...help, moderator, anyone, I can't seem to edit an earlier post. This is almost as annoying as not being able to find Penzoil Ultra :P

...as far as driving conditions, I'm a responsible adult, and actually do baby the engine and driveline, as best I can for the conditions. In fact, friends say the car is far more capable in the 1/8th and the 1/4 than I'll drive it (MPH higher than ET would indicate), but d*mn'ed if I'm going to blow up the rear end or a drive shaft just to cut several tenths off my times. The car is daily driven after all and I do not intend for it to get to the point that it's a trailer queen.

Makeup oil was added a couple months before the 1/2-mile event and the day of dyno time, so about 3 months before the OCI. It was the extra, and LAST quart of Penzoil Ultra that I had.

As far as the engine work, it was done just before I yanked all the Castrol Edge out. So there shouldn't be much in the way of excess assembly lube (zinc and moly, right?) in the oil as that went with the prior OCI.

Thinking of dropping the Platinum when OLM hits 50% and putting in Amsoil SS. Anyone have any thoughts on SS or recommendations on another non-M1/RP oil?

Amsoil Z-Rod would be PERFECT for your engine, IMO.

Check it out here:

Amsoil Z-Rod

Wow, that even has a nice 4-ball wear spec. I was considering the Premium Protection 10w40 since it certainly appeared better than the SS 10w30 and Euro 5w30, but the Z-Rod certainly looks better in all respects short of TBN. So its looking like Z-Rod is next.

I have to agree, this would work great for your application.

Bonus: Here's a VOA for it: https://bobistheoilguy.com/forums/threads/amsoil-z-rod-10w-30-zrt-with-tbn-and-tan.164344/

I think you are crazy, you just turned out a great UOA with PU...why change? But we will see if your decision on z-rod is as good and cost effective. Wear should come down anyway since you have done work. I think the P-Ultra did a great job.
