Two questions from a newbie...

Yes. An EaO is a hard sell if you're not (at least) willing to do extended filter changes even if you're following shorter oil sump changes. That goes for any filter. If you're renewing the sump on a 3-5k basis AND insist on changing the filter every time, then there's not much payback in terms of cost:benefit from expensive filters. The view can be altered by total annual mileage. Someone doing 8k a year with 6m/5k recommended changes vs. someone doing 15k+/year doing 5k changes.

I agree. It just doesn't make sense to use a filter designed for extended OCI's when you are changing the filter every 5K.

HatetoWork,

List price for the 90915-YZZD1 Yoyota filter is $5.41 at MOST Toyota dealers. The dealer I bought mine from threw in a new drain plug gasket for free. Didn't even have to ask. They List for a $1,(rip off)that is why many dealers include them in the cost of the filter. The filter is good for OCI's up to the warranty dictated 5K miles.

Thanks for that, Hermann. I'll call my dealer on it and see what happens :)

BTW, why do you run a quart of a different oil with your Syntec? Does that give you the best of both worlds, syn and dino?

yes, but when you can get them from Fleetfilter.com or find the Bosch's on sale for $3 each why wouldn't you? When I finish up my OEM stash of filters for the Tacoma and HL, I'm going to use nothing but Napa Gold or Bosch until I notice a change quality wise -- not to mention, Wal-Mart's supply of ST filters is slowly dwindling anyhow. We can't win ya know!

Ya, well At that time I will just go wix or purolator or whatever. All the USED ST's I have examined have held up and I have uoa's using them that show good filteration performance (ie insolubles low at 7-8k miles.) Plus they are just a black can on the outside like a wix or toyota filter. I used to buy my filters each oil change at the toyota dealership so the would document it for my truck(the 2002). Another filter that works great but is kind of a risk that I have tried (ie you are on your own) is the motorcraft FL400s) Great oversized filter.

I had 5 qts of Valvoline SynPower that I got free after rebate, and needed a quart so I just got a quart 5w-20 Valvoline Dino, because we need about 6 qts in our Taco 4cyl engines. Plus I figured the add packs were pretty similar. Also thought it would thin the 5w30 a little. 5w30 Synpower is fairly thick. 10.7 Cst IIRC at 100C.

I posted this to another question regarding Toyota's oil recommendation:

Yes. The Technical Service Bulleten (TSB) states that 5W-20 is OK. But, for better fuel economy & better cold starting performance use 0W-20.

More recently, Toyota announced 0W-20 across the board:

In the July 1, 2008 Edition of Flashpoint, ILMA has announced that Toyota has officially decided to switch the recommendation on engine oil for certain vehicles from SAE 5W20 and SAE 5W30 to SAE 0W20.

ILMA reports that these changes will affect all Toyota brands, including Toyota, Scion and Lexus. The change will also appear in owner's manuals.

No further information is offered on timing or specific vehicles.

Please read more about this announcement here:

That would be nice if they allowed 12 months 10k miles with the 0w20. But 6 month 5k is kinda a waste for premium oil such as 0w20. The good news is this will probably increase the demand, therefore the availablity of this grade. If Toyota wants to start requiring synthetic oil why don't they come out and say it?

I can't speak for Toyota. But, the motivation is clearly fuel economy.

Personally, I have 0W-20 in my Ford 500/Taurus and change at 10k miles. But, I don't think you'll get any dealerships to extend the drain interval!

By the way, a lot of dealerships will use whatever grade is in their BULK oil tank (i.e. 5w30). So, if you want 0W-20 or 5W-20, you may want to specifically request it.

In a 5k mile interval the0w20 would have to save me 3-4 gallons of fuel to make up the price difference. That does not seem so unreasonable. at 20 mpg that would mean I would burn 250 gallons. If I gain 1% fuel economy that is 2.5 gallons. If I gain 2% I am money ahead.

When I do the math it hurts my wallet. every 5k miles at 3.650 a gallon I spend 912.5 ....Ouch ouch ouch.

I suppose an extra 10-12 bucks a change is a reasonable gamble now that I am rationalizing the stakes.

They say, I do not have the specific SAE paper handy, that you will save 2% in fuel economy by going from a straight 30W oil to 0W-20.

But, to put it in perspective, you would save 8-10% by driving 65 mph vs. 75 mph!

I suppose if you did both...

I already set the cruise at 67 normally. That is how I can eek 22-23 mpg out of a loaded Tacoma double cab. Highway the diff in viscosity is lost in the wind noise literally, but it is the warmup phase of the driving regimen where this could be handy.

Really no need to worry. Just use what makes ya feel comfortable and change every 5-6 k.

trdparts4u.com has the oem filters for $4 each, and if you buy 10 of them the shipping is waived. I beleive the tax was waived as well if you don't live in TX.

I've ordered several things from them with great results.

Hope i'm not in trouble now for listing websites.

Hey, 3Toyotas, thanks for that link :) I just ordered 10 filters at a total cost of $43.00, with free shipping. That beats the heck out of buying from my local dealership.

What does everyone think about this Fumoto valve? It looks convienient as [censored], but have there been any problems with using them?

While I agree that it would be convenient I would worry about something hitting it and causing damage or causing it to drain. It is possible that I shouldn't worry about that but I do.

I have a Fumoto on my truck.. It is way up under the skid plate, and therefore protected. There is an access hole for the in the skid plate to allow it to drain right into my collection bin. No worries.

It does take a little longer to drain the oil, but usually when it's draining I'm checking the other fluids and getting the new oil and filter ready to install.
