I recently took a trip that was one of the best I have had in a long time. I stayed at the Holiday Inn Express and the entire staff went out of their way to make me feel welcome. I flew Southwest and it was great. The price from the "discount" places were higher than Southwest. The flight attendants were friendly and made sure everyone was comfortable. It was odd to see strangers chatting like old friends. I arrived 10 minutes early at my destination and my flight home was on time. I have flown other airlines and they can not compare to the over all attention to details and friendliness. When I got on the plane a young man offered to put my carry on in the overhead compartment and we chatted about everything. I am 5' tall and so I appreciate someone putting my bag up for me.

If you are planning a trip consider Southwest.

I've also heard great things about SW. Never flown 'em, though. I was kind of apprehensive about the whole no seat assignments. I figured it could lead to a crazy mad dash for good seats. I believe in the fact that my common man is polite and considerate, but spending enough time in an airport or on a plane call's that view into question.

I'll fly them at some point. I mean, I've paid more to fly AA, United, and USAirways and it's not like you're getting any special treatment from them. So, why not go cheaper, it can't be any worse, can it??? LOL

Good to hear you had an good trip!

SW is great. They are a model of efficiency and keeping a company in the 'black'. They actually lower their customer's expectations with frilly stuff and comfort them with the basics...reliable, low-cost transportation.

Unlike other carriers that charge $45 per carry-on where "the airlines are not happy until their passengers are not happy". Thankfully, SW doesn't subscribe to this way of doing business.

What's the big deal about seats? Status symbol for those who booked way in advance? If I get an aisle seat I get clowns climbing over me for the lavatory. Window= I have to climb over others.

I think airlines assign seats to allow the customer the perception that they're in control, distracting them from the otherwise miserable service.

Where did you go ?

Southwest is the reason why so many other airlines are struggling.

I love the window seat so I can see the flaps on take off and landing.

And good for them.

I've flow Southwest A LOT in the past 4 years - I've had 2 free roundtrips from business travel alone. The cattle call boarding is much better now with sub-numbers inside each boarding group. And they're the only airline to serve Wild Turkey (and they mail you drink coupons every free flight you earn).

I've had just as many bad experiences on Southwest as I have had good ones. That says volumes about the industry when one of the 'best' airlines gets a 5 out of 10.

I just back from a 5K miles road trip up the east coast...I stayed at the Holiday Inn Express,Hampton Inn,La Quinta Inn,and Comfort Inn...I am happy to say each one was awesome and made me feel welcome...If I had to pick the best of the best it would be the Hampton Inn.

My girlfriend and I fly about a half dozen times per year. We now go out of our way to fly southwest.

They do not charge stupid bag fees. They are a very "minimalist" type airline. Do not expect any frills, just sit yourself in the seat, and fly to your destination.

Sometimes the other airlines seem cheaper, but when you add up baggage fees going each way, Southwest is usually cheaper.

Southwest is a little like a cattle call when boarding, its kind of funny actually. But for the cheap prices and friendly service, I'll stick with them.

Hi Helen,
The few times I've flown Southwest I found myself smitten by the spunky, cheerful service and atmosphere. It's different from other airlines. Thanks for the thread. :)
