Hey guys getting close to 73K on my 03 L 200 Saturn, and want to get the transmission serviced. Should I flush the transmission or get the filter and fluid change. BTW the car is a 2.2L eco.tec w/ auto.

You're overdue. Change the filter, the fluid, AND then get a flush. Then, start regular fluid/filter change intervals.

Hi there,

The transmission is not supposed to be serviced before 100K miles. You are not overdue.

However, it is good preventive maintenance to drop the pan, replace the filter and refill with 8 qts of Dexron III. I would not bother with flush.

I did mine at 30Kmiles and the fluid was dirty. If you wait until 100K, you may be too late. Do you still have factory warranty? I had the six year, 100,000 mile expire in January and it is still going strong at 46K.

It may be a good idea to flush the brakes at the same time.

You're going to get a lot of flak from members here by making this statement. But the rest of your post makes sense, and even contradicts that statement. I agree with no flush (assuming flush implies using added chemicals that may be aggressive), but a fluid exchange would be a great idea.

The manual does so 100K for normal conditions. I drive %70/30 hwy/city mix at about 4K a month on a slow month. So I plan on keeping the car for a while, it is paid for and I save my car allowance for maint. items and saving for new/used car.

Dealer or independent. I have a good Dealer close by and several independent transmission shops. I trust the dealer. Thanks for all and any help.

I also go by the OLM with M1 5w30. The light comes on or about 7K-7.5K is a blackstone UOA needed or am I not pushing the Mobil too far.

Thanks

Brian

Hi there,
Vow, that is a lot of driving. I can hardly do 6k per year...

I think you should balance your expenditures and not bank on lubrication only. You also need to change coolant and brake fluid.

Don't worry about the light. It is tuned for mineral based oil. In Europe, extended drains are scheduled with semi synthetic blends save alone fully synthetic like Mobil 1.

My sister-in-law's '01 Grand Am shows the same trans maintenance interval. I still dropped the pan and changed the fluid at 50K and the fluid was really skunky.
