I am hoping to get a consensus or at least some feedback on the top 5 sludge prone engines of the past 10 to 15 years. Any input would be appreciated.

Me? I don't take most of these so-called sludgers seriously for I have researched the used car market for used Toys (finally bought a used Gen-5 Camry for my wifey a month ago) and have yet to come across a sludger in Canada so far.

Personally, I think this is just a number in the statistics and bears no significance whatsoever.

My 2c's worth. Don't buy a car but walk if you don't want anything to do with sludge, fossel fuels and pollution.

Q.

2000 saab turbo convertible.. friend has been the victim of a sludge plugged oil screen... costly at $8k to replace with a *used* engine.

Pretty much any turbo engine that is operated with mineral oil will most likely sludge up. But that's like saying that the human body is prone to developing high cholesterol if you feed it nothing else but McDonalds.

No sludging issues were reported on this engine in Europe, where it was fed proper synthetic oil.

So yeah, here in the US, getting a used VAG 1.8T engine is risky just because VAG did not mandate the correct oil straight from the start.

okay, Means that just becuase you have sludge prone engine, do not "jump to anything"...Most is overblown.

Not sure which ones, but some of the earlier Saturn engines had sludge issues bad enought to warrant TSBs.

The only 1.8T VW/Audi engines that were sludge "prone" were the ones that ran North/South in the engine compartment. Passats had this type of 1.8T. Audi A4's had the sludgers as well.

The 1.8T in the Beetle, Golf and Jetta were not the problem engines.

I hate those big plastic engine covers. All the new VWs come that way now. Like staring at a plastic wall. Just makes for extra work come maintenance time and makes quick visual inspects a pain.

i happend to be a proud owner of that sludgefest chrysler 2.7liter - thats what my 300 came with and guess what .... i dont care in 15months chrysler is getting it back. so ha ha ha all the way to the bank

Saab engines bulky? Have you seen a Saab engine? Pieces of [censored]? How many turbo engines out there are putting down 15.5 psi of boost stock plus getting 30+mpg easily and thats in my 2001 Saab. Yup, these engines are [censored]...

The Ecotec engines that the new Saab uses are world acclaimed. GM uses these as well and I read nothing but praise on them.

dodge 2.4L Dohc turbo 4 cylinder that comes in the Neon SRT-4 and turbo PT Cruiser.

Stock is 11-16psi depending on weather. I dynoed at 232hp 264ftlbs torque.

If I am really nice to the car, I can get 31-33 mpg all freeway, all 60-65mph. Or, I can get 6-7mpg on the roadcourse at Portland International Raceway

At least are the most notorious.

+1 on the Toyota 2.2L. I had a 96 Camry (bought it with 20K on it) that began sludging up badly at 40K. It always burned a lot of oil as well. Too bad as it was a fun car to drive as it was a Camry with a 5 speed, which was hard to find.
