Sure it will cost a bit more up front and its a Ram but i can't imagine your getting any kind of decent mileage on a 6.0 fully loaded and towing. I've seen brand new diesel rams in the low 40s.

I am really not interested I a diesel. I am not a truck guy at all so it sit on the side of the house when not in use. Maybe when I retire and buy my last truck.

You can have a diesel truck that sits on the side of your house when you don't use it. Nothing wrong with that. All i'm saying is, check out the resale value of the diesel trucks vs the HD gas. The reason i got my 2005 gas HD a few years ago was it was just so stinkin' cheap. The first time you load up and tow those miles in the diesel you won't look back.

But if you spend $15k more in the first place, does that extra value when selling used really matter?

Its not really 15k. OP was looking at a $36k crew 2wd base model. Same thing in a Ram Cummins is like 42k on sale.

I would also seriously consider the 2017+ Ford super duties if you are traveling with 6 passengers. The cabin is quite a bit larger/nicer than the GM trucks. 2017+ F250/350 in the gas or the diesel would be seriously nice.

Not just crew cabs are pricey … I'm long past the days of a 2500 coal fired and my 32' park trailer and big V-hulls … all kids are drivers now … so back to my starting point … 4WD shorty and small fishing boat … $44k sticker/$35k drive out … really loaded and hard to find the regular cabs …

The cheapest Silverado diesel on Auto Trader is $52,800

I won't be able to look at it until Saturday, but it being a 2WD makes me think it isn't going anywhere anytime soon. Most people want 4WD. For what I do with it I don't need it.

All things being equal on a GM truck the diesel option adds under 10k. I suggested the Ram for the superior Cummins engine and dirt cheap price. You travel to Idaho, and they practically give them away. Low 40s diesel 4x4 crew cab long bed rams all day long. Now for a GM only buyer i agree with OP-get the gas. GM diesels are more costly and the GM gas engine is so good. If i wasn't so infatuated with the GM gas V8s i would probably have bought a Ford for that superior body. Gas Engine? GM wins. Diesel? Cummins. Body? Ford. just my opinion. 2WD is probably not a good idea to buy today. I had one and it did everything i needed but i still went 4x4 this time. Just getting the truck on ramps for an OCI is easier with 4x4 for example. There is a lot of nice things about 2wd only, namely the price, i think they need to come down to perhaps 36-37k total out the door for that truck, being pre owned and 2wd. Most people won't even look at it. OP will certainly take a bath on resale value compared to a diesel. OP drives his truck low miles. Go ahead, look up some really minty low mile diesel trucks of any brand. I've seen GMT 800 duramaxes asking in the 30k range simply because its still at 50k miles and super clean.

If you want a new truck......Get it Mike!!!!

On the other hand.....Factory Cruise Control can do added to your 2002.

If you do get the '18......Replace all the exhaust manifold bolts with ARP chromoly replacements!

While the Cummins ISB is a really good engine......Superior isn't the word I would use. The gap has closed & nobody bothered to notice.

I have been driving 2WD trucks for the last 15 years. You just don't need 4x4 where I live and camp. I don't need the extra expense. I have 17-19 years before I retire. Just want a newer gasser I can pay off in 5 years and drive for 12ish. Then I might get a Diesel for retirement.

I didn't mention him buying a Diesel, because the OP made clear that he didn't want a Diesel. Plenty of people know exactly what is available in Diesel pickups.

The Duramax is essentially all new in '17, the Super Duty was also essentially all new, and it's Powerstroke has had numerous updates, but still uses the problematic HPFP.

Here's an unbiased towing test showing the Ford and the RAM that was last significantly updated in '13. The GM wasn't tested, because the weight used is beyond it's rated capacity. Ford claims more HP/torque and a higher tow rating, but it's slower than the RAM while towing, and while getting 10% worse fuel economy.

I didn't say so. Member 'dareo' did...

I was simply clarifying that there are people that do know about the current pickup Diesel engines.

I did find it interesting that the old, lower rated Cummins manages to out pull the supposedly much more powerful Super Duty, and gets 10% better fuel economy while doing so. While the GM isn't even rated for that weight.
