I am in need of a "stone gray" colored F350 dully pickup bed. Came across this black bed, it has all the exact "options" as my F350. I would not need to use the tailgate.

Soliciting thoughts on the challenges of having this black bed painted to gray.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

Are you trying to paint it yourself?

A competent body shop should be able to prep and repaint the bed for the best results.
I would have a body shop paint it. Question is more along the lines of is painting a bed of this nature a normal task or requires some special abilities? Some jobs are worth doing, other jobs are not.

A challange in the area i live in is fiding a body shop to take a job like this. Almost every body shop I spoke with only wants insurance work.

The inside who cares do a bedliner.
The outside....hmmm.
You have to do 2 sides and maybe around tailgate?

Most paint and body shops I know would want the bed to be mounted on the truck/frame so the job can be moved easily. Usually prep happens in a different location from paint (booth).

Interesting comments in this thread:

I'd think the body shop would set it up in a paint booth on sawhorses. It's pretty common for them to paint parts off a vehicle.

That's also from 2008...

The last time I had body work done, they took the bed off of the truck to do the work.... and had it sitting on sawhorses.

It would not seem difficult to have done. Transporting it, if not attached to the frame of the truck, would be difficult though. Proabably 2500 to 3000 here to factory paint match. Paint cost alone can be pretty high.

There's a good Maaco in Oklahoma City that does nice work at a reasonable price. Although time table can be a few weeks. Since you're ok with travel is why I mention them. I believe it would be worth the trip. Auto Auction Rebuilds on YouTube has used them many times along with another car flip channel that keeps changing names. If you search the Auto Auction Rebuild's channel under videos, plug in Maaco and see all the results. Plus get the street name of that Maaco since there could be two of them in that city.

I assume the fenders are bolted on fiberglass. The "correct" way to paint them is remove them - otherwise you have the risk of peeling where the seam is.

The challenge is finding someone that will do it. The above estimate of 12 hours sounds about right, but the shops around here are $150.00 - plus materials - would easily be $2K or more.

Having said that a truck bed in good shape is hard to find - I would get it if you need it.

Depends on how much of a hurry your in to have that truck fixed up.

I’m my area it wouldn’t make any sense at all. Any of the auto body shops that would be able to actually get a decent colour match would want $3k or most likely more. Any of the shops that might do it for less would probably do a poor job.

Some of these Ford colours on the higher end trucks can be hard to match. Most I’ve some pearl and metallic flake in them. I’ve seen quite a few shops struggle with it.

If it were me I would wait and see if one comes up that matches your colour. From what I see on the road that’s a common colour although perhaps not as much for a service truck take off, that is I’m guessing where most of these used beds come from
