Think cell phones should be banned while driving?

What's the difference between changing either of them? Ahh, one camp believes that changing the radio station on my cell needs to be illegal. All in the name of "safety".

Unless you also want to make changing the radio station on the built-in radio illegal, the want to make cell phones illegal while driving makes no sense.

Actually sound logic. How could one toy be different from another.

The silence is deafening. TWO major questions unanswered...

Atleast on a radio with fixed dials/buttons, changing the radio station requires almost no time actually looking at the radio. I doubt anyone has their cell setup to change radio stations in 1 second or less?
Also, in ontario texting/cell usage has overtaken drunk driving as the leading cause of fatal accidents.
We already have a law banning texting and hand held usage but enforcement isn't all that serious yet. I'm sure with a decent telephoto camera they could do 100's of tickets a day per officer. A clear image of the driver, the phone and the license plate should be enough I'd think to just mail tickets to people.

And in my vehicle it is simple as changing a radio station. My hands never leave the steering wheel to click the little button then I just go on driving and what appears to be talking to myself. When I am done the same button is pressed to end the call. To call someone the button is pressed and I speak "call XXXXXX" and no further input is needed.

Oh really? What if it's due to an emergency situation WHILE you're driving?

Hands free is legal here, and it is far better than fooling around texting on your lap. You still are distracted though, try talking while merging onto a busy freeway and you'll probably have to stop for a few seconds to negotiate a smooth merge... And probably you will have to get your caller to repeat what they were saying.

Silly idea. While driving to work this morning I saw a cop entering information into his laptop and another driver focused on his NAV screen. Both took their eyes off the road something I do not do if I decide to answer my phone.

Then you pull over, stop the vehicle, and make the call...it's not rocket science...

So cell phone use while driving should be allowed because people also do other stupid, unnecessary things while they're driving?

No, but we should also ban the radio, passengers, shaving, putting on mascara......lets just take all the mirrors out of the car because they would enable things like this. While we are at it we can take the guages, including speed guage out because to look at them you have to take your eyes off the road. We should also not be allowed to talk to ourselves, bop our heads to the music within (cause we already took the radio out), think, or look around. That would make the roadways 150% safer and ensure that grumpy grampi gets to his destination stress free.

About a month ago I saw a guy putting on hairspray while driving on the Interstate, so there's lots of things people do that they shouldn't (and not just in the car).

Now you're just being silly...you really don't see any problem with people using cell phones while they're driving?...I wanna live in La La Land like you do...

As I've said earlier, you can't justify bad behavior by pointing to other bad behavior...

That's funny I've been thinking the same thing throughout the duration of this thread. To wish that all others be banned from doing something that bothers YOU must be lala land in addition to being grossly narcissistic.

If you can't see that cell phone use while driving is a huge, dangerous problem, then you are blind...

I may be blind......but im still driving around lol.

The lawmakers, in my area at least, must not think its all that dangerous to use a hands free device while driving. While I agree that texting, emailing, social networking, etc has no place being used by the operator of a motor vehicle, I see nothing wrong with having a conversation by voice if done via a handsfree device where your hands are on the steering wheel and your eyes on the road. Its almost no different then having a conversation with someone sitting next to you.

Some people do waaaayyyy more dangerous stuff then that going down the road. As mentioned earlier, applying mascara, shaving, Ive even seen someone reading a newspaper once.

When it comes to traffic laws, lawmakers make laws based on what generates revenues, not what's dangerous...they couldn't care less about making the roads safer, they're only concern is being able to fund their pet projects...

It must be different everywhere but hands free is legal and preferred here. I used to have a hands free head unit in my previous Civic and I used it periodically when I was commuting. No distractions while talking aloud in the car, no phone in hand.

Now I am no longer commuting so I just don't have a hands free setup anymore. If my phone goes off while driving I don't even look at it.

At least you got that part right. They often ignore existing law entirely when setting speed limits.

So why not ban cell phones, and fine driver $500 per offense. If you drive a commercial vehicle, it's a $1,200.00 fine for the operator, and the company also gets a fine. You'd think they would crack down on that to make money.

Who knows...doesn't make any sense to me that they make new laws but rarely enforce them...but they'll put up red light or speed trap cameras to create revenue...

Yeah, why not? Throw one more barely enforceable law out there to help solidify the wonderfully functional relationship average citizens have with the police. This is not what police forces were intended to do and it merely increases the cynicism with which the public views the law and law enforcement personnel.
