I live in a rural Michigan locale and it seems that in the past while multiple stores and shops are starting to use/stock this oil. My grandpa had used it in the past with success. I'm just wondering if this is a local phenomena or is it happening elsewhere? It seems many indy parts stores and gas stations and repair shops are starting to stock it en masse.

There is alot around where I live, mostly stocked at NAPA and some independent auto part stores. It has been getting more prevalent in the last couple years.

I see it quite a bit around my area. Just used their 80w-90 gear oil in the Jeep in my sig with no problems. I would imagine its not the best stuff , but it meets all the specs one would need.

I have some 5-30 wolfshead in my ranger right now, seems to be doing fine. I also have it in the trans (manual 5 speed). Aco stocks it where I am at.

The Wolf's Head oil your grandpa used is not from the same company. Wolf's Head was a Pennsylvania independent company (I think) before being purchased by Pennzoil and then aquired by SOPUS. It is now part of Amalie.....in other word's , it's just a brand name.
The oil is decent,IMO..

Their 30 weight never let me down.

It used to be sold at "Uncle Buck's Dollar store" in the late 1990s. If I had to venture a guess it's a brand they're using for general merchandisers to stock that doesn't compete with a more main line oil. FWIW, Citgo oil can be found in most supermarkets here, albeit at outrageous prices.

Amalie, I'm pretty sure, private labels "VIP" oil around here.

My neighbors use Wolf's Head Motor Oil...

I'm getting ready to retire myself so, I'll use the term "elderly" with the greatest respect...

As an after reitirment business, my "elderly" neighbors(husband/wife) both long since retired, travel from festival to festival around Western NY State selling their Hotdogs, Hamburgers, Italian Sausage, Kettle Corn & Soft Drinks. Depending on the type of festival that they attend and the extra help(employees) that they'll need, they may not bring all of their equipment for cooking/popping

They pull/haul their heavy trailer and pull-a-long propane stove, kettle popper and coolers to each festival using only mini-van(s).

They use Wolf's Head motor oil(from SAM's Club) in their mini-van and put on ~ 200K miles around NY State with some repairs along the way before getting another used mini-van. They also use WH oil in their everyday vehicles(Fusion/Escape).

I believe that they get the WH oil in lager quantities from Sam's Club along with the food that they sell at the festivals.
I don't know if WH oil is any bargin at SC but, it's convienient since they buy their products from Sam's

our shop uses wolfs head 5w20 semi synthetic for our conventional oil.

Ha!
Referencing TWO dead comedians in one sly post!

I've seen it a couple of independent parts stores in Western Canada, I don't think they have any major canadian distribution.

Solid oils. I would put them above the Supertechs and closer to a Peak. Good quality and a reasonable price. I have used their ATF and oils in the past and the cars always seemed to run nice on their oils.
