This is really just a rant, but nothing grinds my gears more than impatient people. It happens everywhere - on the road, in the grocery store, at the cinema, at a takeaway, laundry... wherever. People just can't wait their turn. Everyone's in a hurry with absolutely no respect for anybody else around them.

In this country, traffic congestion has become a way of life - it doesn't matter whether you're in the city or on a 5 lane highway or what time of the day it is. It takes me an hour and a half to get to work (13 miles) in the morning and I generally wait a good hour after work so I'm not stuck in traffic for this very reason. It's still packed, but at least traffic is moving, even if it's at a very slow rate.

People are impatient. Whenever traffic comes to a crawling halt, they break the law and use the hard shoulder. And they don't drive slow either...imagine a great big SUV blasting right past you at 80 MPH whilst you're stationary. These lanes have speed cushions designed to give your suspension a severe workout. Worse bit is, these speed cushions are literally 3 strips of "cavities" in the asphalt, which are always covered in pebbles and sand inside. As a vehicle drives past, it's very common for vehicles in lane to be sand blasted, or even worse, sprayed with small pebbles.

Warning signs are all over the place telling people not to use the hard shoulder, because it's reserved for the use of emergency vehicles only. People are stupid, there's an average of 80 accidents per day in a country with a population of 3 million residents. Some of these accidents are fatal, and lives are sometimes lost because imbeciles keep using these lanes, blocking access to patrol cars, ambulances and firetrucks when there is a fatal accident up ahead.

The cops fine people who use them, without a care in the world what their reasons are. But it's gotten to an extent where they just started to drive past patrol vehicles and the cops are under powered because they cannot stop each and every vehicle.

It also happens at the lights. You could be in lane, waiting for it to turn green, until a vehicle comes into your right, sneaking its bumper in between yours and the vehicle right in front of you. Or if you're at a designated U-turn lane intended for a single vehicle - it's not uncommon to see two or three lanes! It's no wonder accidents happen so regularly!

Anyhow, on my way home this evening, this is what happened when some idiot in a VW Golf drove right past me on the hard shoulder:

Traffic was flowing, but this idiot deemed it fit to overtake a series of vehicles on the hard shoulder at 120+ MPH!

If it was an emergency vehicle that caused this, I wouldn't be so angry or the least bit concerned. I'd still be sad that my vehicle was damaged, but I'd know that lane was used to save a life, stop a fire or catch somebody breaking the law. But when some [censored] uses it, my blood starts to boil.

I believe in karma, and I'm definitely not one for wishing bad things happen to people. But I sure hope that dipstick never reached his destination because of his own stupidity, without taking innocent lives with him.

My car got hit while stationary a couple of days back, resulting in a $250 charge to respray my front bumper. Now I have to shell out another $300 for a new windshield. The repair didn't turn out as expected, and I can and will get fined for a damaged windshield. That's $550 wasted because of someone else's stupidity that resulted in damage to my property. By law, I cannot get comprehensive cover for a vehicle over five years of age either, and none of the insurance policies cover windshields. Not having a good night to say the least.

That's tough man. I feel for you

These are the things you put into a big pool of pros and cons for wherever you decide to live. It eases the pain a little if you put it into that context

I totally get this, and it's a shame.

In Sri Lanka where i grew up we have the same driving mentality - no regard for fellow drivers and rules only exist in books. They create phantom lanes every day at rush hour and will get within centimeters of your car from all sides, just to squeeze past - unless you drive the same way, you never get home. high beams on all the time.

These things are getting better but only slowly...I used to drive like that - there IS no other way to drive when you're born and raised there; now after living and driving 10 yrs in the US, i can't drive there any more. I think I will kill myself or someone else if I did.

nice rant, most drivers down here are completely oblivious to anything going on around them, i cant go 3 miles without seeing a cutoff, tailgate, speeding, barely moving, no turn signals, blowing past everyone turning left at the light to merge in at the last moment - (there time is more important than yours) or some other dumba$$ traffic infraction which is all really just common sense. traffic laws are just not really enforced, too many cars and too much traffic unless its flagrant or happens to be me....

Yep, I can totally agree with this. Last night people were rushing to pull out in front of me, resulting in me having to brake hard on multiple occasions in the same 5 mile drive. The road was clear behind me, too, with no other cars visible in my rearview mirrors. I guess they couldn't stand to wait the extra 2-3 seconds at the stop sign while I passed at the 55 mph speed limit. At least the road was clear, so the car could slow down quickly. I need brighter lights and a louder horn!

Reading experiences like this online (and seeing new dings in my car weekely) are what keep me from ever wanting to own a new car again. My old '97 Legacy, I literally couldn't care less about the dings and minor scrapes, so long as nothing was hanging loosely or smashed in. My new '08, every ding was like a personal affront. After 4 years and 60k miles, the hurt is less.

FWIW, my wife gets to hear me rant about how selfish drivers can be while in traffic. I've said this before, but I take extreme pride in using my brakes as little as possible, letting people in when necessary (except those who try to cut in last minute,) and leaving adequate space so as not to cause a multi-car accident should some one plow into the back of me - honestly, why do people stay in traffic bumper-to-bumper, and then jack-rabbit to the next stopping point. Trust me when I say I've been through some [censored] traffic, and that losing a few spots in line to lane-hoppers is worth the reduced stress! This coming from a 20-something guy with a sporty car.

In the many times I've driven through NYC/NJT traffic, only TWICE have I been witness to sweet, sweet justice. The most recent was a couple of holidays ago while on my way back from visiting family. I can't recall the exact location, but, similar to what you've described, people will fly past stationary traffic at ridiculous speeds. The worst part, is that the shoulder ends prior to crossing a bridge, so these jerks who are inconsiderate enough to FLY down the pebble-infested breakdown lane are also nasty enough to force their way back into the lane. Sure, they've gained themselves 100+ spots in traffic, but THEY are a part of the reason FOR the traffic.

Anyway, on to the justice part:

The road curves before the bridge, and once I saw a cop stationed at the end, handing out tickets. Something similar occured elsewhere, and the cop was good enough to catch even those who got back in as soon as they saw him (if people would let them,) thinking he wouldn't notice.

LOL This is epic silliness,

These stupid selfish people do NOT have an illness nor are they ill.

I despise when the "psychiatric field"

CREATES a disease for people who are in reality just the scum of the earth.

It is critical NOT to feel "sympathy" for these idiots, creating a "condition" is detrimental to eliminating and solving these selfish attitudes.

This illness has been around for a while. Narcissism is named after a Greek myth about Narcissus and Echo. The Narcissus flower is also named after the myth.

Your response is typical of a narcissistic person. Narcissists know everything, and everyone should think and act like they do.

A lot of the problem is people are ingrained with having everything NOW. Texting, commercials flashing every 1/2 second frequency, etc.

People's brains have changed and are ADDICTED to NOW!

I always ask: So, what's the next MORE INSTANT gratification...

Kuwait sounds just like Miami..I used to get stressed out everytime I got on I-95 and all the other roads down here but now I just accept it.

The F.H.P. is way under staffed and when they are out there they are always working accidents..Every highway down here in Miami-Dade and Broward County is a suicide run with I-95 being the worst.

To top it off vehicles in Miami-Dade and Broward County do not come equipped with turn signals.

I was wondering if they stopped equipping new cars with turn signals.....

Also over here a lot of people don't stop for stop signs. I mean, sometimes they don't even slow down at all.

That makes me think twice about crossing the street when I'm walking and a car is coming. (stop sign between me and the car) I always let the car go first!

That's what I'm doing too, walking the dog daily, and I see it happen on a regular basis.
