IMHO, the Cavalier was sort of a low point for Chevy. (As was the Pontiac Sunfire.) High points for Chevy were the SBC engines, including the 4.3L engine of the S10 and GMC S15 blazers, extended to the Olds Bravada. I very much like the F-body cars called Camaro/Firebird, and i will be owning a C4 Corvette before a C5, possible exeption for a 1980 or later Stingray.

The Sliveados always saw duty in my family in 5.0L (5.7L? year was 1991) Silverado 2500 trim, and the Caprice was a great car and has seen service as police cars. The Delta 88 Royale, though an Olds, was also great and im not familiar what platform it shared.

Long live GM.

My Dad started out with Chevy's, had a '55 and later a '58 Chevy. Drove the latter until 1976 when the frame got to the point where it wouldn't pass inspection. Replaced that with a '71 Buick that the neighbor was selling, so still GM. Traded that in in 1981 on an AMC Concord with the 2.5L Iron Duke engine, so "technically" he still drove a GM.

Mom's car was a 1975 Impala, which later got replaced by a 1986 Caprice Classic. I got the Impala and it was stolen and stripped for parts a month later (silly thieves, didn't they know GM=junk?) I replaced that with a 1979 Impala that I bought from one of his coworkers, drove that until 1989, and gave it to my sister when I bought my '89 GMC S-15 Jimmy. Got the Impala back when she got a new car and was going to junk it and got another 3 years out of it, then sold it to a woman who specifically wantd a late 70 Chevy's because she worked on her own cars and her daughter had her license and was getting her own car. I still saw that thing on the road for a couple of years after that.

I later bought a 1999 Malibu, and later still the Cobalt in my signature. The only reason I didn't replace the Malibu with another Chevy was because the dealer near me was being coy about whether GM was going to let him stay open and the next nearest dealer was over 10 miles away from me -- and I have enough hassle dealing with a "distant" Dodge dealer already.

So, yeah, given that the majority of my cars have been a Chevy, I think I like them. And since the dealer near me stayed open, that'll make it easier to make my next car a Chevy.

GM, like it or hate it, is a core industrial US company. It's in the best interest of our country to keep GM viable, regardless of cost.

It's great to rail against the bailout. However, from a long term, national security point of view, GM is a critical and large manufacturer. Capable of making nearly anything mechanical.

I'm not a "GM" guy, or a "Ford" guy. I like all the American car companies, old and new. Union or not.

Thanks for the great memories! More please!!!

Thank you! I couldn't have said it better myself. It's a sad state in this country when our own citizens refuse to buy our own products from American companies.

Well let's see my "GM" memories. My first 86 Cavalier RS wasn't a bad car at all. Awesome stock radio and a bunch of other gadgets. Only had it 6 months though till it was totalled. The next Cavalier had a bent crank but that was from a wreck

The next was a 88 GM S15. Gutless and couldn't keep electronic sensor to save itself. The iron duke was solid and somehow it's still running today. Other GM's in the family were about the same. The 77 GMC rusted out and nickel and dimed till it died. A 00 Impala had the dexcool problem and trans went out a 100k. Grandparents Aveo steering column locked up 2 in the first 2 weeks they had it. Other grandpa's 85 Chevy full size the 4.3L drank oil from the day he got it.. ended up being a switched vacuum line from the factory. Aunt's Cavalier blew a head gasket at 75k. There's a few more but the point is made.

Too bad I really like GM's interiors. Much more comfortable than others. And most GM's manage to get better mpg overall.

I have VERY fond memories in the backseat of my parents '66 Impala ("date car") with my high school sweetheart (now wife)......except that time her dad caught us!

Most people nowadays couldn't navigate such a large boat.

At any rate lets see.
Dad had a 78 Monte, 80 Malibu Wagon, 86 Chevette, 01 Malibu, and now a 12 Cruze. They were all pretty good. The Malibu needed the intake gasket but was trouble free otherwise.
Me? I have had a 1971 K-5 Blazer, 1991 Corvette, 1988 3/4 ton Silverado, 1991 S-10 Blazer (I miss that thing!) 93, 96, 98, 01 Camaro Z28s. The 93 and 98 together and the 96 and 01 together.
Now I have the 07 Equionox and 02 3/4 Silverado. All have been very good to me with limited problems. The rest of my fleet is all GM. Have owned other stuff, always go back to them.

The LT4 is outrageous, it handles like a Vette should, and is very comfortable. The S10 was underpowered, but reliable, the 88 Camaro was nice, but underpowered (2.8 V6), the '83 was beat on pretty hard by a previous owner. Got rid of that one quick! The '84 Impala was an old police car, (3504bbl, 4 bolt mains), nice car, rode well, smoked tires all day, but got atrocious gas mileage.

I own LT4 Vette. They just an OK car.

Needed to rent a car since my venerable 1984 VW Rabbit GTI (which I loved) had been in an accident...t-boned in the A pillar by a large F 150 going 50 mph...Luckily I came out of the accident without so much as a scratch, just shaken up. The driver that hit me suffered a brused ego and whip lash.

Went to enterprise all they had was full sized cars..I could choose a Chevy Caprice...or a Ford Crown Vic....(good grief!) I had always been a small car guy. I chose the Caprice...just because...drove it for a day...and it was huge whale of a car...big in every way...ponderous handling, decent acceleration I believe it was a V8...and big flat uncomfortable front bench seats....Steering was vague, and lifeless, brakes were OK, had decent get up and go, but not a barn burner....

I just couldn't get used to the size of that thing on the road, I never felt in control of it because of the horrible suspension and steering, and felt unsafe driving it. Called up enterprise and begged for something smaller, and after a week they were able to get me into a new Ford Tempo. Much more manageable car, a little less refined power train, but ok handling. All I could say was I was darn glad when I got my old Rabbit GTI back from the body shop over two months later!..I had enough of big, sloppy, uncomfortable domestic cars.

I like my chevy...back in 99 when I had my 99 z28 it was almost comical how much faster the f body was compared to the mustang. I know Ford has caught up and the new mustangs are fast. My 99 camaro made 306 to the wheels stock...the mustang gt of that year was making 260 at the crank...kinda sad. Anyways...as a mechanic I will give my worthless opinion...all cars are junk. They will all break. They will all wear out, rust, and fail at one point or another. Don't think just cuz u spend 100k dollars your getting anything that is much better then anything else on the road. You'd be surprised how many very expensive cars I work on are towed in broken down before the first oil change. Sad for 100k dollars. Anyways..I hope gm is around for a long time to come (and Ford ,dodge etc..)

I love my Silverado and I think GM makes the best trucks you can buy. I beat the snot out of my truck and it just asks for more. Plus when it breaks parts are like $10 and you can fix it with a hammer. I won't buy anything else.

I always laugh at those silly little Japanese trucks around here, they have weak frames and rot out.
