This is the second early change on my Son's 2012 Mazda 3. We refilled with the Toyota 0w20 and an M1 again but will let this one run to the spec'd 8000km. Things seem to be going the right way, which is good! I still have the filter for this as well as the first change and will post pics when I finally get around to opening them up.

Comments and questions welcomed.

Oh my, look at the moly in that FF!! And am I reading it right that Mazda's FF is almost a 40 weight? That's quite the drop in operating viscosity with the 0w20.

Good trend down on Si, Cu, Fe.

Does Mazda spec a 20 weight for this application?

You're reading right but I think it's wrong. Mazda spec's 0w20 in this app yes, I have a feeling the lab messed something up but they didn't retain the sample.

These are great samples and oil filter examples, many thanks for sharing!!!

I would not be shocked if the factory fill was a different weight. The high moly seems to mean it was some kind of factory break in oil. I think insanely high moly in break in oil we see a lot. Mazda 3s are all made in Japan, for the North American market? There is no telling what oil they might use in factory fills. Perhaps, even their oil recommendation is different in Japan?

This reminds me a bit about Mercedes factory fill. In North America, they primarily recommended 5w40 and 0w40 oils. However, the factory fill is a Shell 5w30 break in oil, giving some low viscosity numbers on UOA that surprise people.

FFs can be quite a bit different.

Thanks again for the fascinating reports and filter images! Great reading/looking.

Did engine operating noise change significantly between the factory fill and the Toyota 0W-20? I would expect some change in engine noise with that great of a viscosity difference, if it truly is that different.

It's not my car so I'm not as intimate with it's noises as my own. I will say I thought it sounded louder the first few starts but but I can't really say with any certainty. I can say it isn't overly noisy, nothing that catches my attention if I happen to be outside when he is leaving.
