Hey guys,

I have a 1990 Nissan 300zx Twin Turbo automatic that I recently imported from Japan. I don't like the look of the ATF, 'nor the way the transmission behaves when cold (holding gears too long).

I am going to replace the fluid and do a cooler-line flush (if I can get the lines), then simply extracting what I can through the dipstick and then dropping the pan for the filter.

But I digress...

I want to know what people think about Walmart's "Tech 2000" brand of synthetic (synthetic blend) automatic transmission fluid.

I am going to be going through quite a bit of ATF if I do the cooler line flush, then extract and drop the pan. At $9-10 a bottle (CDN) for a litre of Mobil1 ATF, that's going to be expensive.

Can anyone tell me if the Tech 2000 synthetic ATF is decent stuff, or if I have to suck it up and drop big bucks on Mobil1 ATF...

Thanks!

It should be good enough for a mis-behaving transmission. I would not invest anything better until you're sure that the transmission is functioning normally.

Use the tech2000 for the cooler line flush. If the transmission improves, do future maintenance with a better fluid.

Not always. Their products are made by either Exxon or WPP, both pretty respected. Maybe not quite as good as say Mobil, but they certainly at least meet the specs.

If rebuilding the transmission is not an option, you may want to run some ARX, Lubegard, or Trans-Medic in with the new fluid. I'm not a believer in a mechanic in a can but these products do seem work as advertised and may help extend the useable life of your transmission.

Some older automatic transmissions are programmed to shift later when cold. This helps warm the engine up quicker, which reduces emissions. My '95 has behaved this way since new. It is a bit annoying, but just the way it was designed.

For a short one or 2 thousand mile "flush", I just use the least expensive DexIII Wal-Mart fluid- they have it in gallons sometimes. If you want to do a little extra cleaning use some ARX or LC at the same time. Just try to do a complete changeout when you do it, like a cooler line flush to get all new fluid in there. If all goes well and transmission is still ok afterwards, then go back with another full flush of semi-synth or full synth ATF of your choice. IIRC, these transmissions take a beating in these cars and are not known for their longevity, so every little bit of maintenance or additional cooling goes a long way. Although up in Canada the cooling may not be as big an issue as places further south...

I would use the cheapest (Walmart's tech 2000 reguar atf) and see if the new and clean fluid is making the difference first.

You might do a few drain and fills first with cheap stuff.

Well, look where he lives- they probably have a lot of different things that we don't have in our stores. I would think that more folks are using synthetic ATF's there becuase it flows/works better when extremely cold in the winter.

what's with the "Walmart..?

" reference?

can we not mention retail outlets?

I'm just trying to find out if mentioning store names is not allowed...

Wallyworld is mentioned alot here....alot. As with all other major stores, Advance Auto, Autozone, Big Lots,....
I think alot of folks view walmart brand products as subpar. When it comes to oil filters, I will take a cheap 2.07 Walmart(Champion Labs) ecore before I would trust ANY fram made product. Supertech fuel injector cleaner has tuned up my lawn gear many a time, and I have also used it in my car with good results. I buy their carb cleaner sprays as well. Works as good as Chemtool spray. Granted their oil doesnt come loaded with moly like Havoline, or ester based like Redline, but its a decent oil.
Their high mileage oil quieted down my old engine. Most of their auto chemicals I would view as "inexpensive" rather than "cheap". Cheap implies thats its lower in quality. Sure supertech fuel injector cleaner isnt as strong as regane but its 1.97 instead of 5.32.

Hope I dont get labeled a wallyworld backer or anything

I cant stand the employees and I am SOOO tired of getting carded for buying certain products, but I like most of their auto stuff.
