I was wodnering if anyone has ever drilled and tapped their oil pan drain plug for installing an oil temp sender? If so how did it go? Are there any companies that make pre-made drain plugs (I've heard they exist, I just don't know who makes them)? Will I encounter any problems trying this? I'm guessing I could get an OEM bolt, and drill through it using a lathe, but I would be reducing the amount of material in the plug by quite a bit (Although I doubt the plug is stressed alot). I belive the sender is 1/4 NPT or 1/8 NPT, I'm not sure.

I've done it worked fine for me. one thing, depends on how hard the drain bolt is. old G.M. are made out really hard steel very hard to drill. toyota are soft very easy to drill. leave a wire connection so you can remove the drain bolt easily.

Dont drill any holes in your oil pan, the temp sender has to be in the direct flow stream of oil in order to have an accurate reading. Buy a sandwich adaptor that fits between the oil filter and block.

Shops selling precision gauges like Defi, HKS, Apexi would usually carry all the necessary adapters. Example

Volvo uses a oil pan drain plug sender. You may get lucky and it would fit your application. Volvo uses a VDO gauge in the 240 oil temp gauge option.
The wire attaches via a spade connector. The VDO gauge I got at Napa and bought the sender from the dealer.

Hmm interesting ideaas. I already have a sandwhich adapter going to my air -> oil oil cooler, and I have drilled and tapped it for an oil pressure sender.

Why would you need moving oil past the oil tmep sender? In the oil pan the oil is slowshed around enough and cycled through by the pick up. I would think the temperature would be pretty even. Or would the problem lie in oil returning from differnet parts of the engine being at different temperatures, and thus not reaching a uniform temperature before being sucked into the pickup and read by the gauge?

Also, would you have the part number for that Volvo drain plug?

Oil in the oil pan is moving around plenty fast enough to keep the oil in the pan at an even temperature. If it isn't moving, that means your engine isn't running or your oil pump isn't working, in which case your engine will soon stop running.

Since you already have a sandwich adapter, try both and let us the the temp difference. I believe you will get a lower reading at the drain plug. Furthermore is your temp sender points downwards on the oil pan, it is a little bit risky dont you think?

Just call a Volvo dealer and ask for a oil temp guage kit for a 240. Or just ask for the oil temp sender drain plug. Make sure the gauge range is the same as the VDO gauge if you get it else where. Yes, it is a lot cheaper to buy the gauge at NAPA.
