Thanks Steve... I will do that tomorrow and let everyone know the response I get from them.

Anyone have any experience with bypass filters on this forum? seriously thinking about putting one one the truck. Really don't care for the small filter they stuck on this engine and the bypass filter would allow me to relocate and use a larger filter and afford me the oportunity to easily install an oil temp gauge.

Going to search the forum for UOA's with bypass filters installed and see what I find.

Thanks again everyone for your input!

I can't recall anybody using a bypass filter on a gasoline engine. I thought bypass filters were used on diesels to filter out soot particles that occur from the combustion process.

addyguy,

Its a 65 Chevelle Drag Car that I cut the frame and floor out and fabricated new frame and floors. The engine is a 355 cu in Chevy, Hilborn mechanical alcohol fuel injected, clutch car. 1/4 in 9.47 @ 141. Run Redline 40w racing oil. Mostly old school with some modern touches here and there. All welding, fabrication, engine assembly and cylinder head work done by me.

Thanks for asking... as you can tell, I love the sport... lol

A_Harmon,

Yeah, But there are a few crazy people

people out the that are running them with gas. Wanted to relocate the oil filter anyway and thought... if I'm gonna do that maybe I will throw in a bypass filter too. As you have read in my post earlier... having a hard time leaving the oil in there for more than 3k and the bp filter might give me the piece of mind leave it in for 7k to 10k.

Thanks for your response!

I would go for bypass filtration on your 8.1 if you can handle extending your drain intervals, with guidance from UOA's. There would be no benefit of the bypass kit if you stick to 3k even 5k OCI's.
Can you fit a bigger filter in the current location?
What filter brand do you currently use?

tuckman,

I usually run wix filters but have run K&N on occasion... the filter is located directly above the front differential so there is NO room for a larger filter and the stock filter is small. I think the bypass would let me (mentally, LOL) allow for longer OCI with UOA's and try to extend OCI to somewhere between 9k and 12K.

Still looking for recommendations for labs to send samples too... is there a better place than BStone people here are using?

If you have an impliment dealer or a heavy truck dealer near by they have kits available. I use Deere and thier kits are 11.xx plus postage, so I have around 13 bucks per sample.

If there is no room then that would be my excuse for a filter relocation/bypass filtration kit.
I am in Canada and use Fluid Life.

I find that Redline, along with a couple other high moly oils, can quiet down an engine. Not sure if its the moly but that was the only commonality. Not sure what the weather is like where your cold starts are, but a 0w will flow much quicker too.

If you want to extend the oil interval, keep the full flow filter where it is. Add a bypass filter fed off a T at the oil pressure sender, and return it to the pan or oil cap.

A Frantz filter kit(using Frantz media or toilet paper rolls), along with the Amsoil BP-89 oil cap swivel return is something worth looking into. Frantz filters can sometimes be found at swap meets and on ebay pretty cheap.

Also, check into the bypass filter forum here. There are various brands to choose from. Frantz, oilguard, motorguard, stilko, trasko, racor, luberfiner, harvard, NTZ, Amsoil.....

I'd say so, as the addition of LubroMoly MoS2 often has the same effect.

Super chevy, you know I don't think you should worry about summer time towing, change to 5w30 for the summer and enjoy. If you check the data sheets you'll notice a difference between all of Red Lines 0wt fluids and the more familiar 5 and up wts. If you do add a bypass filter I think one thing it will help is your peak oil temps when your towing as your total fluid capacity will be higher and I think generally one could expect a lower average temperature as a result. 3k is way to fast, at least 6k should be doable and don't freak out about your uoas, generally it takes three or four to level the readings, my own uoas have consistently showed a downward trend even though initially the iron was somewhat high. Good luck.
