I knew this topic has been discussed before by another memeber, but this oil caught my attention last night at the canadian walmart. Most synethic oil here in Canada ranges from $35-$40 / 4L jug. But the Supertech/Tech2000 0W30 seems to be a good deal of $28/ 4L jug.

Anyone can confirm these "facts"?
- Supertech (canadian version) = tech2000
- Tech2000 0W30 made by Imperial oil
- Tech2000 0W30 made by Shell oil
- Tech2000 0W30 made by recycle oil

I'm looking for some cheap synthetic oil to boot while the xd-3 0w40 price went up the roof ($35/jug)

I thoght it was Petro-Canada. They are the only ones who make a 0W-30 PCMO in Canada, the group III Arctic 0W-30. Last winter it was selling for $4.90 per litre in cases from bulk distributors so the price point is about right as well. I have heard in the past Canadian Supertech and Tech 2000 products were either Safety Kleen or Petro-Canada.

basically the super tech is an excellent deal, and seeing how it sells for ALMOST EXACTLY THE SAME PRICE as Canadian Tire Formula 1 synthetic, which is made by Shell, then probably it too is made by Shell. or Safety Kleen. and there is nothing the matter with recycle oil. these oils that we drain out of the crank case are NOT "used up", just the oil is dirty, and the additives are finished. Canadian Tire puts their synthetic on sale every now and then, sometimes up to half price, sometimes 20% or 30% off.
Very likely, when you buy a "synthetic" oil change from WalMart, they probably do use the super Tech. and people do pay a lot of money for that. so probably it's good stuff.

If this is indeed made by shell, does the supertech/tech2000 0W30 synthetic pass any OEM approval? like MB229.5 or BMW longlife?

Here in Austin, Texas, I bought a couple of quarts of Walmarts' Special Supertech Synthetic, and after checking the ID numbers stamped on the qts, I found out that it was actually made by Quaker State for Walmart.

Yes, the last time I checked, it was Safety Kleen that was the supplier of all Super Tech/Tech 2000 products.
4 or 5 years ago when they first came out with their 0W-30 I contacted Safety Kleen directly and spoke to a pretty knowledgeable guy who confirmed they were the supplier and all their synthetics were Group III based including the 0W-30 which is somewhat unusual(most are Group IV to meet the 0W-X grade demands). He lived in Oakville and actually recommended there 10W-30 syn oil as being the most stable and suitable since our winters don't get that cold.

however, the Canadian verion is different from the US version of the supertech oil.

The Canadian Tech2000/supertech is made in Canada.
The bottle resembles formula 1 (Canadian tire house brand) which is made by Shell.
The only shell product here that I can find in canada with 0W30 is the Helix Super X that meets VW 506 spec.
That made my wonder if the supertech 0W30 is indeed made by shell.
I'll check the product code tonight again and see if the supertech is indeed a shell product.

For the past year, I waited until the stuff was on sale (you can usually get it for under $20 / jug). Or if you are lucky, CT generally will put various synthetics on sale for about $20 to $22 / jug. Walmart also has a good price on PP sometimes.

Here is a comment from John Cutshall from Safety-Kleen as to why re-refined oil is not available in retail stores. He sent this to me yesterday 1.2.2009:

The real problem with retail marketing of our products is that there is little demand.

With low demand, it is impossible to get any retail outlets to stock the products.

Any time somebody goes into a parts store for oil, they are either looking for a name brand or the cheapest quart there. We do not offer either product.

"If you talked with Safety-Kleen in Waco, they do not distribute the America's Choice lubricants.

We have distributors in Ft. Worth, Fredericksburg and Gonzales.

These distributors do supply our government customers or sell our products as housebrand.

I'm sorry that I can not offer much hope of retail availability, but over the last 10 years, the State of California has spent tens of millions of dollars trying to generate retail demand for rerefined lubricants with little success.

With the economy down and State budgets being in the red, there will not be any support from those areas.

Thanks for your interest in our products."

Straight from Mr. Cutshall/Safety-Klean Regional Manager for Texas and the Western half of the U.S.

That my friends knocks off Safety-Klean as the supplier of Supertech Oil from Walmart....In my humble opinion....

In Canada it's known fact the vast majority of Supertech oils are produced by Safety-Kleen and they are re-refined product. It's sort of been a "long standing" practice in Canada that re-refined oil is used for the cheaper store brands.

If the Supertech synthetic is made by Safety-Kleen here according to someone calling Safety-Kleen I will definitely believe it.

In the US, Supertech is a Warren Performance Products, Shell or ExxonMobil product depending on location.

Wait a second though, does that mean Tech2000 and SuperTech are the same? Because last I remember looking at Wallyworld, they had both brands on the shelves.

Don't assume that everything coming out of Safety-Kleen is rerefined, because it isn't. http://www.safety-kleen.com/products/OilProducts/Pages/PerformancePlus.aspx. Safety-Kleen's blending plants can blend either rerefined base oil or new base oil, conventional or synthetic, any way a customer wants.

Safety-Kleen produces rerefined base oil and buys the additive package. They can buy other base oil for custom blending if that's what the customer wants...just place a big enough order to get their attention.
