For 3-4K OCI what's the advantage of a metal end caps? Have we seen a failure of non-metal endcaps?

See TurboJim's quote. There have been lots of threads about the end caps separating from the pleats. The only time you would know this is after the filter has been used and cut open ... then it's too to do anything about it except to change filter brands.

In all the Ecore's I've opened up I've not seen media come through the cage. The media is most vulnerable to rips & tears around the seam. I've seen that happen several times.

There have been at least a couple instances posted here, where that apparently had occurred. Here's two pics and the threads from which they come. Pic #1 thread. Pic #2 thread.

That's why this design is scary to me. That's a big chunk of paper to be stuck downstream in an oil gallery or somewhere.
Yikes. That could ruin an engine I bet.

Walmart changes her oil usually and we pay around $9 for the wix then $40 for the service with that oil and they credit like $2 for the filter. If these filters are decent I will just start getting them instead. Thanks!

I change the oil between 3000 and 4000 miles every time.

You can purchase a filter somewhere else and Walmart will install it.

In that case, I would purchase the inexpensive Purolator Classics.

Since you are changing oil every 3-4K, I would just use the Walmart house brand Supertech Oil. It works fine and a few posters here have used it exclusively for over 200K.

i change my filter every other oil change because i dont like the dry start after changing the filter.. Its not to save money i pay a little over $2.00 for our bulk filter in the shop made by purolator

For a 4000 mile OCI, the ST 6607 or 7317 will do the job just fine. The orange Fram would as well.

If you want to get away from an 'economy' filter, you could ask them to put on a Fram TG. I think they (TG6607) are going for about $6 now-a-days. It would at least same you a trip elsewhere to get that Wix.

You don't have to let Gramps or Uncle know that you used a Fram...

The TG is no different than the regular FRAM in terms of construction.

Bleh, those fibers, they could potentially come off, I dont like fibers gunking up my engine.
or little bits of random filter media going into my engine...

The only filter I have ever had engine noise on start was with a ST. Replaced the ST with a MC and noise was gone.
