Off topic...

Thinking a little more about where the term comes
from... out here if someone were to go out into the
mountains, or deep into the desert (think of the
vast rugged lands of the west), historically at
least someone would need to be "outfitted" for the
adventure. They'd need the right horse/carriage/vehicle
for the trip. They'd need the right supplies, food,
tires, whatever. There are even businesses called
"outfitters", which deal in this sort of need.

In modern terms, this might be a place where you
can get all your hunting and fishing supplies, etc.

So the term "outfit" is sometimes applied to a
vehicle. This is most often used to describe
someone's hunting rig (truck, for you easterner's)
that is lifted, with 45 inch big mud tires and
all the off-road paraphenalia one can imagine.
It can also mean the enconomical box that you send
your daughter off to college in.

Cliff: Thanks for the explanation!

Bill in Utah: When you refer to "outfit" I know you're talking about a car/truck, but what is the derivation of the term "outfit" as it pertains to a vehicle? Is this a regional term? I've never heard anyone around here refer to their car/truck as an "outfit" before. Just curious.

Yeah! hey Bill in Utah, are your "outfits" plaid, striped, or paisley?

Hmmm, lots of theritical discussion. Let me recount my personal experiance.

2000 GC 3.3, currently 79K miles. ST syn 10/30, 6900 miles in 10 months, looked and felt great when changed. Next oci 4800 miles in 14 months. Oil looked nearly new. Now running M1 10/30,because of the P/B B3G3 free discounts. Otherwise I would still be running the ST. I still have 10 qts. of ST bought before the price rises.

Running RST 5w40 in my 89 turbo Caravan. Engine loves it. Turbo spools instantly. Will do oci at 1 year, about 5000 miles.

Both ST syn and RTS are excellent oil, IMO, and I will continue using them.

I know two dollars is two dollars, but why NOT spend the 2 bucks to get the HDEO addy pack? It would seem to me RTS in 5W40 is the sleeper choice for those of us w/ finicky euro cars.

Well, I guess more than 2 since the $14 Rotella is 4 qts vs. the ST syn's $!2 5 qts. But still...

Brian I agree. I am swithching my 1.8T Audi to Shell Rotella T Synth 5w-40. I am sure it would be a great oil for my car. What are the opinions here for those familiar with this german engine on doing the 10K OCI's like they do in Europe? I am really partial to staying with my 5K OCI's, but just want to get some opinions.

My German/Audi owners. What about doing this 10K with the Shell Rotella Syn 5w-40? Any ideas? Yea or Nay and why? I know it is good enough for the Europeans so why not US?

As long as the motor is not sludge prone 10k should be fine with that oil. However if it is, I wouldn't go over say 7-8k even with the good additive pack.

Sorry i'm not an audi or german car owner, I just recall the 1.8T's being sludge prone.

Well, I'll say I'm glad I had an HDEO's TBN and additives after my oil analysis. TBN went from 12 to 6.2 in 2000 miles. I don't know if a group III would do better or not?
