I changed the manual transmission oil today in my 2011 WRX. The capacity listed in the service manual is 3.7 quarts. I put in about 3.25-3.3 (3 full quarts + about 1/4-1/3 left over from the differential), figuring I'd check the level and then top it up as needed. But when I checked, it looked like it was already overfilled:
The black mark is where the oil ends. The overage is about 3/8". The L and F marks are pretty close together, so I'm not sure how much oil the space between them represents. I would assume a quart but I would have a very hard time believing I was a whole quart over when I just put in 3.25. I let it drain until it was just barely dripping -- of course there's going to be some fluid that doesn't drain out but nearly 1.5 quarts seems really excessive (assuming the L to F space really is a whole quart).
I'm debating whether to try to shove a hose down the dipstick hole and pump some fluid out or just leave it. Any thoughts? Anyone else with experience with the Subaru 5MT who knows how bad this is?
The oil was above the F from the factory but I don't remember how much. I don't think it was quite this much.
