Study: New E15 gas can ruin auto engines

Burning ethanol in an ICE produces a ton of weird byproducts that are potentially harmful. And many of them end in "zene", as in carcinogenic.

It will not save the world, but it should be developed from non-food sources.

There are all sorts of places to start. You could start by googling the air quality studies in Brazil following their move to ethanol.

The most [censored]/scariest publication out there is the original study published by a stanford professor. This link discusses it:

http://news.stanford.edu/news/2007/april18/ethanol-041807.html

If you can find the original study that was published, it is scary to think about a country running on 100% ethanol.

Yeah, but if you listen to the Ethanol fans we are being prepared for the second coming!

Seriously, we are discussing ethanol, not gasoline. Read up on it, the info is all over...

the truth about leaded gas is to long for here. the short story is, when leaded gas burns the lead is chemically changed to a bromide salt. cause of the bromide is mixed with the lead. IE, it is NO longer lead. course they wont tell you the truth. i think benzene is not used any more.

e15 is dead!!the ethanol mandate is done as of feb 1st 2011..epa took away control from the state and gave to the oil companies...here in colorado, and the rest of the country ,a station can sell ethanol free gas all year long only in the 91 octane..the premium is used in blending the gas to make different blends of ethanol in case some people want ethanol in their cars.. as an vol. alternative energy.i found this out today from conoco and the epa.i hope i explained this right....brads conoco here in lakewood,co. started selling it early at the beginning of feb.instead of march..they can now sell 91 octane ethanol free all year long!! which is great!!!they also said e15 is dead and gone....e15 is a rumor for use.

You mean that there's a nuclear reaction that takes place when alkyl lead compounds are burned, and the lead magically becomes not lead any more ?

Rubbish

The lead was removed so that catalysts could be employed to reduce smog.

As to benzene, it's still used up to 5% (neat), and less than 50% aromatics.

When fuel is burned, benzene WILL be present in the exhaust, often when it isn't even in the fuel in the first place.

If alcohols are burned, the results typically contain a lot of aldehydes, which are pretty carcinogenic.

+1
LOL, this is about the craziest thing I read on BITOG. I don't have a problem with morris. I have a problem with US education system.

When I started cold cars in my garage I used to smell unburnt hydrocarbons. Now, with mandatory E10, it smells almost like antifreeze.

Fine, lets move on to the next option in the war on fossil fuels, electric cars!!! Yeah!.. Electricity requires no fossil fuels to..oh wait.. Seriously now... Even though we have 500 years of natural gas under our feet, whats wrong with the real solution, hydrogen?

The "real" solution? For how many more years do you think we can continue to grow suburban sprawl and still get around in individual vehicles? What fuels them is the least of our problems.

Yeah. "one human, one vehicle" took the place of "one vehicle per family". On the highway jammed in traffic i look around an notice. Its less than 100 people causing all this...on the phone..

^LOL. I saw a documentary some time ago that referred to a study showing that ONE car going slowly or being driven inattentively can slow down an entire mile of highway. I think we can agree that there is NO SOLUTION in sight for the issues related to individual drivers. The suburban model is really only about sixty years old so I predict that mobility issues will eventually be our undoing. Electric cars, hydrogen cars, propane cars, will not solve this inevitable failure. If you think you spend too much time and money commuting now, just wait!

Officially, Hyundai claims that using E-15 gas or above (i.e. E85) will void your warranty and may cause engine damage.

It says so in my car's manual.

I haven't seen very many hydrogen mines...which means it's not a fuel, it's a storage medium (just like a battery) for energy made from a fuel.

You can burn hydrogen like any other fuel. Hydrogen is a fuel. The origin of an element doesn't dictate whether or not it is a fuel.

And the only fuel I know of that is completely renewable with some outside energy input.

If you dig up coal, conatining it's full quotient of energy in as dug state, it's a fuel. Natural Gas is a Fuel, Oil is a fuel, timber can be a fuel (renewable too).

Hydrogen, which has to be manufactured is a storage medium. In principal, filling up a hydrogen tank full of stored electricity is exactly the same as filling eh battery with electrons.

If the electricity is made renewably, then either make as much sense as the other.
