I buy most my auto maintenance stuff at autozone. They carry fram, stp, and bosch for reasonable price filters for the most part. I know fram stinks but how would you rate the other two? I can get purolators at pepboys for cheap too. Pepboys is just further for me.

Holy CRAP STP SUCKS! By far the Worse filter in the world in my opinion, and thats even worse than Fram. The shop (Midas) changed my oil once (It was cold- and i didn't want to roll around on the floor, and they were doing it for only 14 bucks) They used Cheap Havoline oil (which i understand is good) And an even cheaper filter- STP. The stp filter is LESS than HALF the size of not only my OEM Mann filter, but every other filter on the market that made the filter for my car (1997 VW jetta 2.0). So, when I changed my oil after that, my filter is mounted under the car, i actually had alot of trouble getting the filter out because a piece of the frame under the car was in the way, and the filter was so small it was actually behind it, so i had to remove the frame. Then- the filter was so small- that the filter wrench i always use on the car was too big for it- so i had to buy a new filter wrench. I checked if they put the wrong filter on my car by accident- i went to autozone and looked up the part number for the STP filter that fits my car- and it was the same useless filter. I learnd two things that day: Never let Midas change your oil- no matter how cheap.
And Never use STP filters. out of the three- i would choose bosch

STP's are e-core design (most) so they will be smaller. STP has better filter media than ST. Good bang for the buck and way better than the orange can. Best filter for the price at AZ is an e-core STP. Best filter period at AZ is a Mobile 1. Bosch would be somewhere in between the STP and M1.

e-what ever core, or not, I'm old school. Bigger is better. I don't care what kind of design it has- but if i'm understanding correctly- The STP filter will not hold as much oil out of every other filter available for my car. I'd rather use Fram than STP. **** i wouldn't use either of those bad choices IMHO.

I just had a bad STP 3614, the ADBV would not seal. The filter would drain back overnight, no oil pressure at startup for a few seconds until the filter filled back up. I emailed champ, they told me to take back to Autozone for a refund. I bought one of the white filters from NAPA, it was cheaper and seamed better built. The NAPA was $2.50 and the STP was $3. I am done with Ecore's.

Ya'll can run whatever you want. I was just stating fact that the STP was an e-core design and that is why it was smaller. Also, that "supposidly" it is the same design as the Supertech fitler with better filter media. It depends what you want in a filter. Personally, I prefer filters with a spring loaded threaded end by-pass element. Again, run what you want....afterall it is your money and your car.

I'm surprised know one mentioned Purolator as the best, which I thought was most BITOGers favorite. For the price I would consider either one of Purolators. On sale at Advance Auto for $2.44.

Heyy- if you want to run a smaller filter thats on you- to each his own. I'd get a puralator.

kieferS = the filter is smaller because of the lack of metal endcaps. The volume difference, if any, is probably a teaspoon or less. The Ecore doesn't need the hardware that takes up space in a larger can.

I really wasn't trying to start a flame or anything. I just didn't know what the best filter was for bang for the buck. I run nothing but mobil 1 filters on my dodge cummins but the cost is about the same for the mobil or any other filter for that vehicle. I was just looking for the best filter between 2 bucks and 5 bucks for the cars I maintain.

For $2.04 where i'm located, you can't go wrong with a Supertech from Walmart. Built by the same company that makes Mobil 1 filters and K&N, among many others.

For a little more than that, the Purolator premium plus is a great filter, i forget how much they cost, but i think they're around $3. If theres an advance auto parts store near you, their house brand Totalgrip's are the same things basically. Motorcrafts are also the same i believe.

For around $5, the Purolator pureone is an excellent filter, it'd be my top pick for $5 or less. I forget how much each filter costs, i haven't been to an auto parts store recently.

On my vehicle, i run wix filters which run me $6.50 from a chain called acme auto parts. Although if you purchase them online i think the final cost could come to $4-5 each, depending on the filter. Napa Gold's are also identical to wix filters.

this one too

Gary: I didn't know that.... What i'll do my next change- i'll buy the STP filter, and the Puralator filter and see how much each filter takes.

Take a look at Delco or Motorcraft. Unlike Purolator, both have a thread end bypass. When I cut them open, a PF 1177 had half again as much media as an L 10193. I think Purolator is highly over rated here. The ones I have cut open are nothing special and have a dome end bypass. I would take an Encore ahead of one if they made one for my application.

I think you meant MOTORCRAFT is contracted by ford.

Motocraft filters are designed to Motocraft specs. Motocraft is the "Aftermarket" division of Ford Motor Company.

The Engine Division of Ford uses Champion Labs as their supplier.

Ford will not install a Motocraft filter on a new engine at the engine plant because the specs are different between the two filters.

Do not confuse the two...Engine Division and Aftermarket Division.

I have STP on both my cars ('00 and '03) and there isn't a problem. If I had any money and could order from fleet filter I would to try them out.

Someone earlier in the post was saying that ecore design filters do not hold as much oil as the other filter styles. Does that really matter? I mean wouldn't the importance of filtration and flow be much more important than quantity of oil they hold? Say you have a car that holds 4.5qts of oil with standard filter. How much difference are we talking? Probably less than 8 oz of oil. I cannot imagine that matters. Now I don't know if ecore is a good thing or not but the amount of oil they hold? Come on...

Good point. Compare the oil filter to a quart bottle of oil. Most filters aren't going to hole 8 ounces, let along a difference of 8 ounces.

Id see about getting the amsoil Ea oil filter orthe cummins!

For the rest, if theyre GM, go with a delco filter, ive found them the best and good bang for the buck. for Japanese cars, get the Denso 'first time fit' line of filters from imprt parts houses - they are very high quality and not that pricey. For euro cars, go with Mann filters.

Purolator pure 1 is always a good backup to most any application, same for Napa gold, IMO.
