Just noticed this the other day on my M5 when I was changing the oil. The stock centre tube that the filter slides onto has a magnet on the top. I wiped it clean, and only a very small amount of metal paste came off it (just enough to show colour on the rag) before changing the filter.

Is this common? (having the magnet here)

There is nothing on the cartridge filter holder on the E430. I think it's good idea to include a small magnet at the end of the filter holder tube.

IMO...Any little bit helps to trap Iron and Steel.

I use a HD racing FilterMag on my T4R oversized canister filter. It helps to trap the hard metal, like iron and steel particles, as the oil passes through the filter.

However, this is a HD after market magnet. The only way to get it off the canister is to slide it off before removing the filter.

I've been using it for a couple of years now and I'm sure it has caught quite a bit of wear metal. I'm really not concerned about the soft metals...Aluminum, copper, lead etc....since these are most likely trapped in the filter.

It would be nice to see some developed for other types of oil filters.

While a Magnetic filter doesn't remove non-ferrous materials, their removal does prevent the hard ferrous particles from attacking the softer metals.

One can get strong magnets from blown out speakers, I've been sticking them on filters for years. It's like chicken soup.

Toyota has had them on some engines for a couple of years now...I hate the one on my FJ Cruiser, messy to change and costs as much or more as a can filter.

But did it have magnets?

I know Toyota has canister filters, it is often difficult to remove the filter cover on a Toyota Corolla.

Quite right, I meant cartridge. Hopefully a mod can change the topic title for me?
