your doing a good thing for that poor jeep!! keep it up man no car deserves whats been done do it. i hope all goes well!!
keep us updated.

Nice job documenting your work. MMO will start working fast. The oil should turn darker than normal after a few hundred miles.

Cut open those filters to keep track of your process.

This jeep was more than you bargained for...

In a sense, it is. But, then again, I'd planned on it being a project for me over the next few months (I just didn't plan on doing much to the engine). I knew it needed some TLC when I bought it, just had no idea the internals were that gunked up.

I'm getting to this thread a little late. The 2.5L in my trail Jeep is clean as a whistle.

You can remove the rockers and pushrods for cleaning and put them back without worrying about adjusting lash (non-adj).

Just keep doing what your doing. The 2.5L is a tough little engine and if it ran well the way it was, then it will be that much better after your effort.

Oh, that reminds me, Felpro makes a One piece oil pan gasket. It's rubberized with the steel non-crush grommets. It's worth the little bit of $ over the cork and much easier to install. Also: might as well replace the oil pump with a Melling while you're there.

I'll probably at least pull the valve cover, otherwise I won't know how much progress I'm making. I'll likely wait until after a couple of cycles of oil changes, so it may take a while.

This actually crossed my mind, especially since I had the pan dropped. Any ideas on what the Melling sells for?

Depending on where you go, they range from $50 - $80.

Having worked on many a Jeep, it's been my experience that the life expectancy of the factory oil pump averages about 150K miles. That puts you right there. They're easy to change and cheap insurance. I'm currently building a 4.0L for my daughter's XJ and will replace the pump with a Melling.

Had a buddy with lifter tick in his XJ Wagoneer (he HATES when I call it a Cherokee). The motor had about 180K when we changed the oil pan gasket. I did the pump at the same time, and the lifter tick is gone.

All that sludge and it didn't drive like there was a boat anchor or grand piano chained to the back bumper being pulled along and throwing sparks... have the claims of a TV commercial been disproved here?

I wouldn't go that far on the first OCI, maybe 500 miles for the first one and inspect the oil filter to determine the second OCI.

Jason, you're well on your way to cleaning up this engine, good on you. Looking forward to the "after" pics

+1 to this.

I'd be looking for Chevron Delo or Rotella sales.

It has a nice fresh Purolater Gold filter in place, and I drove it around for around 25 miles today. It actually runs and sounds the same, with no discernible difference. I watched the oil pressure gauge, and it stayed at its normal 30-80 (depending on throttle position). The temp gauge also stayed normal, but I honestly didn't expect any real change there.

Its going to take some effort, but I'm going to do my best to drive it as much as possible. Anyone who owns an older Jeep knows these things are short on creature comforts, especially when you are accustomed to driving newer vehicles. I do know it has a small exhaust leak on the top of the pipe, but I am not sure I can get to it with my MIG welder to fix. Guess I'll check on some temporary solutions tomorrow, but it needs to be plugged. Its simply too loud as it is!

Honestly, I would give up my car for my Jeep if it was still in the family. That was my favorite ride out of all of them. It was rugged, reliable and never gave me issues. The internals were probably far worse off than what you have going on now but it would crank instantly. It sat for years as our emergency vehicle and after 2 years of non-use I needed it in the winter. 2 years of no starting, and god knows how the oil was at the time(shared between my brother and I). Started up in the dead of winter and that Jeep 4.0L cold howl like a wolf was beautiful

. 14 years 225k miles and the rust was killing it. Engine and Trans all original =)

God I wish I still had it

It was easy peesy to work on much like my Xterra was and far more fun to drive =)

That pan and pick-up screen weren't nearly as bad as I thought they would be. Some short MMO runs, and the engine will be fine.

This will forever be one of those classic real life rebirth of an engine moment, will give all of us food for thought on oci's and what really happens when we dont change our oil or use the correct oil for that matter.

I certainly hope this Jeep lives a long and happy life. Best of luck to the OP
