Should I buy a Husqvarna?

Currently have an MTD 46" that I bought in 96, it's on it's last legs. The hydrostatic transmission is shot.

I'm thinking of replacing it with a Husqvarna YTH22V42 V-Twin Hydrostatic 42-in Riding Lawn Mower with Briggs & Stratton Engine.

If I take good care of it will it last almost 20 yrs like my MTD?

If not, can you recommend something that will? I would prefer something with power steering.

The twin cylinder Briggs are nice. I'm betting that the Husqvarna overall isn't much more than a glorified Poulan/Yardman/Yardking/Murray/MTD with a cheap stamped out deck and Chinese manufactured bells and whistles. Even new John Deere have their own quality issues though. Maybe Craigslist for an used Deere.

I have a Husqvarna that is 7 years old. It has the 20 hp Kohler Courage single cyl and 46" deck. It cuts 1.25 acres weekly (on avg) from April through October. It has what I think is a rather high ground speed and mows well at full speed. No major issues yet. At time of purchase I thought the deck was thicker than similar Cub Cadet or JD models. I have been satisfied with this mower and would buy another

I have an older Husqvarna and its going great. The only thing I have replaced is a tire and somehow the gas tank had a hole and leaked over 1/2 tank. Mine has a lever for the hydrostatic rather than a pedal. Its a personal preference.

Should be a decent mower. I'd say they're probably a step above MTD. Maybe check Sears for a sale, these are the same thing as a Craftsman tractor, just a different color.

Did your old machine have a filter on the hst? If it was a cheap sealed unit like on the husky then I'd expect husky to last as long. They seem to be a decent machine with ball joints in the steering at least. The real cheap mowers don't.
Get one from a dealer as they will set it up properly to start with.

Bummer!! I was so excited when I saw the headline of this thread. I was thinking "Heck, yea!" If I could find an old Husqvarna motorcyle, I'd jump at the chance to buy it.

But no. Your'e just asking about a riding lawnmower. Bummer!!

I've got a husquavarna chainsaw. It's got a 36" bar on it and I've bought a 20" for smaller lighter stuff.
I've burned up stihl's and various other brands prior to buying this one used. Best chainsaw I've ever had.
Can't comment on the mower though but their chainsaws of my vintage are awesome.

I know a couple of people that have Hasquavarna ride ons, they seem well made and ultra reliable.
However they both have Kawasaki V twins.

My neighbor has a $10+k Kubota diesel 4wd(he does yardwork on the side) and the odd time he's used his clients Husqvarna mowers(when the Kubota broke down...) and he was surprised how well they worked.
Ariens are also built on the same line, and poulan pro, and usually a bit cheaper but they are spec'd lower with the engines, and perhaps the HST. Even for the same sealed unit, there are a few different internal component upgrades that some manufactures buy and some like JD in their dept store 1 series, didn't.
I wussed out and bought a $300 used craftsman, but I might do 30 hrs a year on it, hopefully less!

Just pulled the trigger and bought the YTH22V42 from a local lawn shop. They'll deliver it Monday all set up and haul my old one off.

I'll let everyone know how it goes...

I have a Craftsman which is the same and I have been totally satisfied with it. You might want to look into a Craftsman, most of their riders are made by Husqvarna and the price might be better due to sales going on now.If you can, get a mower with three blades vs two. Those long blades bend with the slightest hit.

The stock oil filter on that engine is a real Pig to get on and off , as it is quite short
(and expensive)

A 3614 fits just fine as it is a little longer, and is about the most readly available filter there is.

I have the exact same mower that I bought in Aug of 2013. Mine has the fabricated deck with lifetime warranty and 3 mulching blades. It does a fantastic job mulching grass but the engine has always been hard to start, the steering wheel is on crooked, the window for the gas level is useless, the trim piece surrounding it was loose. It backs up to slow. What really burns me is how hard it is to start after sitting just a week in the summer. Really I wouldn't buy another I would get A John Deere X 300.

While he was recovering from shoulder surgery, I used a friend's Husqvarna riding mower to mow his yard. His daughter worked at Lowe's. so he utilized her employee discount when he bought it.

Even though it was only a few years old, it was the biggest piece of ______ that I've seen in a long time. Once, when I was mowing with it, when one of the spindle assemblies on the deck simply came apart/self-destructed. It was mainly made of pot metal and aluminum.

To get it replaced under warranty, he had to deal with the nearest servicing dealer (of course, that is not Lowe's) which was 45 miles away (one way).

The turning radius on it was sheer rubbish. The turning radius to the left was bad... and to the right, it was even worse.

It got to the point where I simply didn't want to use it any longer, and was afraid that it would keep breaking down. So, I started trailering my own mower instead.

I'm 44, and I've cut grass since I was 14. That was the only time I've ever had a spindle fail on a mower deck, and need to be replaced. And I cut a lot of grass when I was in high school and college (30+ yards a week).

He scrapped that mower a few years back, and bought a John Deere.

Hope you get a good warranty. You'll need it.
