Shoot out in my back yard

No Revolutionary War, no guns = socialist Utopia, ahahahAHAHAHAHAHAHAAA!

True democracy? Give me a republic, that's for sure. Good Lord... It's not the guns that made the nation, it's the quality of the rough-edged rednecks that got fed up with colonial rule. It's hilarious to listen to such a smug appraisal of our two nations. There is balance, and I'm grateful to live where I do. Tempest is right.

As for health care and everything else, take your pick! Do you want universal "cheap" (actually, you pay through the nose with taxes) mediocre health care or expensive and sometimes difficult insurance-dependent but unparalleled in quality health care? And so forth...

OFF TOPIC.
How nice that there can be an intelligent dialogue on what may be considerd a 'Touchy' subject, without some jerk getting flustered, resorting to name calling, or the thread being blocked for fear that some one MAY be offended.
For the first time in a long time, BITOG is looking UP! :-)

gun control does not mean 0 guns. Unfortunately thats the first thing that comes to mind when someone thinks of gun control. What it means to me is 'responsible management of the sale and use of them'. When I was younger we could buy any ammo we wanted at Canadian Tire. Now you require a valid/current firearms license, along with valid picture ids, to get the locked cabinets opened. That change in policy doesn't bother me in the slightest, and I can't understand why it would. I still own guns, have access to ammunition and no one has come to get them just yet. I would be worried of the current state of my government if I were worried that such a thing might happen

Regarding health care, I'm sure it's great for those that can afford it. What about the rest of the people who can not? Don't get me wrong, I've done my fair share of cursing out our universal health system, but it works and is fair and if you have extra cash you can always go to one of the new private clinics that are popping up in the larger cities, or if you're really rich go south and get the best I suppose.

But after all my typing, I would rather live in North America (USA or Canada) then anywhere else in the world.. so my gripes are moot and totally biased since I live in the Great White North

Friend of mine just moved to San Antonio, Texas. His greatest beef with Canada was the cost of doing business, taxes, etc.. so he figured his standard of living would be much higher. I suppose he is right if standard of living is measured in dollars only. That heat year round would kill me.. I need my seasons (well, except for the worst of winter)

What would the US be like if anyone could buy any weapon at local stores, no questions asked, and ammo was readily available by the case at your corner markets.

A much friendlier place. People tend to respect other people a lot more if they have a gun.

What about carrying on planes, in courts, at your kid's schools, etc

"Gun free zones", those are wacko's/terrorist's prime targets all around the globe.

Ask the Brit's and the Aussie's about that one.

Here's what I wonder (and I don't really know if it's about guns or not):
Why do we have higher crime rates here than in most any developed country? Are Americans typically more prone to committing crimes than Europeans, Australians, or Japanese? Or are we more likely to report crimes, or do we have more things that are considered crimes here?

MarkC,
if you look up the stats on "Nationmaster", more murders certainly seems to be the case. (2.8 times more murders(per capita) than Oz, 10 times the firearms death rate)

Aussies are better at suicide 'though, and far better at rape. Our rate of burglary is 3 times the U.S. (we lead the world on that one), and our car theft rate is double the U.S. (once again, we are the winners)

I read all this rubbish and then I think about how our homicide rate is a tenth of that in the U.S. Still can't get the grin off my face. You lose

That's simply not true. I'm not saying we are any good, but......Murder rates........

The answer to why is simple. Mexico. We ALMOST granted amnesty to them........ a huge groundswell of sheeple actually spoke up. And some even found out how out of touch our pols are.....

This is older but interesting:

I didn't say that. But two things:

1) (Illegal alien) Mexicans ARE responsible for a disproportionate % of crimes in the USA.
2) The murder rate in Mexico is pretty much off the scale.

I know I was a defender in the past as well. But you can get over it. Nothing against legal citizens who have properly migrated to the USA. I am not against emigration or immigration. Just keep it legal and controlled. Why should the USA be the exception to this?

P. My question may not have been clear. I said the "developed" countries. I guess I was talking about Western Europe and Japan. That one chart is very interesting, out of the top 20 most dangerous cities in Europe and the US, 9 (including the 8 out of the top 10) are in the US. My question is why?

Do you have some studies and figures to support #1 , because I find the opposite. Of course, I didn't look for very long.
Mexico itself does have a higher rate of murders than the US, but I find nothing that says immigrants commit more crimes than "natives".
as for 2), I'm not really a defender, but you (and others) often come off as if you're blaming all the problems in the country either on illegal aliens or liberals...and that's an overly simplistic and incorrect assumption.
And, like it or not, they're not going anywhere anytime soon, so what can we do?

I gotta go eat the cooked cow meat now. I'll search later, but the truth is there.

What can we do?
1) Shut down the border.
2) Slowly but surely pitch ALL illegal aliens out. I don't care if they are from England, China, Zimbabwe or Brazil.

There is nothing redneck, liberal or conservative about that. It's the law of the land. And last time I checked these laws are not properly enforced..........dinner is calling.

I suspect the truth will vary depending on the source.
I'll check back later, gotta go to Singles Night at the Korean church.
