It looks like an air outlet. There is some material inside, looks like silica gel. The little hood has fallen off and I cannot get it to stay in place.

Those refrigerators are notorious for frozen coils and ice makers. I suspect it’s something that was water logged and damaged, waiting to fail…

I'd silicone the edges and stick it back in. Looks like some type of vent.
