Is this a decent oil? I know it's expensive but I haven't found a lot of UOAs on it. I am intrigued that dyno tests show a horsepower improvement. I am looking for better mileage as they claim from using this oil. Any experiences? Thanks.

Discussed many times. Search function. I seems Castrol Edge will blow dry your 'romance novel' long locks during the oil installation - I would think this would be a clincher benefit over silly HP or Mileage gains. Plus, BP could use some $$ about now.

You haven't found allot because it's nothing special, for that kind of money there's better choices out there..

Don't fall for the hype.

RP is a fine synthetic, but there's no longer a real clear advantage from one brand to another for the average user.

You may be able to get very similar performance for a LOT less $.

Its a great oil but for the price it doesnt have a whole lot on the competition. Its just too expensive for anyone to use.

Keith,

I say run it. For a few extra bucks per interval you get a group 4/5 oil, not something commonly found. You may also want to consider Redline.

If its group 4/5 how come it doesnt act like one? This has never been proved, has it? I can see the higher zddp as a benefit.
Fr that price I be all over Amsoil ATM/L or RL or M1 0w-40 or the Finest 10w30 PAO - M1 HM 10w30 A3/B3/B4.

Absolute, unmitigated hogwash -- not just for Royal Purple, but for any oil.

Possible, but unlikely; again, same goes for any oil.

I laugh at comments like this. RP can be had for the same or even less than individual qt bottles of name brand synthetics( M1, PP, PU, QS, VVL, etc... )if you shop around. I pay no more than $7 a qt for it here locally and can get it for less than $6 a qt if I order far enough ahead through another local dealer. The average price I pay is $6.25 a qt.

As another poster mentioned RP is a true Grp IV PAO base oil. It is not a Grp III hydrocracked crude base oil. Excellent oil and a good choice. I wouldn't pay $10 a qt for it but $7-$8 absolutely.

However, do not buy any oil to increase HP or MPG. While you may see a very minimal gain in one or both areas due to the decrease in friction it is not soemthing that will be noticeable in the seat of your pants. If you swap the entire driveline over to full synthetic you can see some small MPG gains you can actually notice( I have seen 1-2 MPG gains in full sized GM and Dodge trucks swapping everything to RP ). Just the oil though and you just won't.

With that said what I believe you will notice if you swap to RP oil is that your engine runs smoother and much more quiet. I have never swapped an engine over to RP and not noticed how much quieter and smoother the engine ran on it. I have seen similar results from other synthetics but not as consistantly nor to as high a degree as I have with RP. I believe it is due to their special add pack technology "Synerlac".

hemi that's you man you get a discount, the rest of use poor saps are hit with the full brunt of the ridiculous price. around here it's $12 to 14 a qt!!!,,you do get a inch of dust to go with that tho.

daman;

Actually, I don't always get a discount. If I pay under $6 that is discounted but the $7 a qt price is walk in retail for anyone at that shop. My regular price is $6.25 as stated and that is that shop's regular price as well.

Even if I went to say PepBoys or Napa which are the highest priced around for RP it is only $8.99. I have never seen RP sold for $12-$14 a qt. Not the engine oil anyway. If RP is truly sold for that crazy price around you then go online and get it. You can get it online for around $7-$7.50 a qt even with shipping.

The RP is too expensive argument is flawed. It can be had, for no more effort than it takes to get Amsoil, for a resonable price. If you will only use an oil sold at Wal-Mart in 5QT jugs then RP is not for you but that does not make it over priced. It is availabe to most anyone for a reasonable cost if you just look for it.

at $6 that's a deal for sure,,load up.

come here to my CarQuest(the only pplace local for me) you'll fall off your chair!! lol

Thanks for all replies. I can get it for $7.50 a quart. Can this oil go 7K easily? If so, I may try it. It's a Dodge 5.2L and I carry dirt bikes and do make some short trips during the weekdays.

I don't have to stock up. It never costs me more than $6.25-7 a qt to just walk into a local store( couple local speed shops ). If I can order it ahead by a few days I can get it for $5.75-$6 a qt.

Now, none of the following is meant to be personally offensive. I have no issues with you at all and actually respect you on this board on the whole. I am simply using your comments that you only have a local CarQuest that sells RP and the way you have based your price comments on that one place. This is what I mean by people don't actually look for it and price shop. I can guarantee even without being there and personally visiting the other stores near you that sell RP( or can get it at least )you can get it for far less than $12-$14 a qt.

There is a HUGE list of RP dealers in MI on the whole as well. So it is available "local" to you even if you had to drive 30-40 minutes for it.

http://royalpurple.findlocation.com/

You also have a TON of O'Reilly auto parts in MI according to their web site and they sell RP. They recently had a 5QTS RP w/ filter deal( K&N or RP filter can't recall )for just $39.99. Take out the $10 bucks for the filter( and that is a low ball # )and the oil is $5.99 a qt.

Currently on E-Bay you can get RP by the case or 6qts shipped for approx $7 a qt. Tons of auctions right now for it.

Again, no offense meant. Just pointing out you do have options for it if you chose to use it. It is your right obviously to use what you want. Just pointing out those who say it is too expensive seldom if ever actually shop around. RP is almost always available to people in that $7+/- a qt range. It costs me $6.97 a qt( individual bottle )for name brand Grp III synthetics at Wal-Mart so $7 for RP is hardly too expensive.

$7.50 is not unreasonable with today's oil prices p/ individual qt bottles. You will pay $7 p/qt bottle for M1, PP, etc... so $7.50 for a true Grp IV oil is reasonable. ( you can't compare p/qt bottle prices to 5qt bulk jugs prices from Wal-Mart ).

I have run RP in a 5.2L Dodge( 1994 Ram 1500 ). I ran 10w30 and it did really well on it. I have run it in some 4.7L, 5.9L(360 gas), and HEMI Rams as well. 7K should be ok. I have a friend who ran RP 5w30 or 10w30 in his 95 Ram 5.9L(360) for 10-12K and it did great( excellent UOA results ). That thing had 200+K when he sold it and it ran great.

I have always swapped the RP out in my Rams at 5K just because they have all been under warranty. I would run to 10K and not worry if not for the warranty issues. RP has always done great for me in my MOPARS( trucks and muscle cars ). I am using 5W20 right now in my 08 HEMI Ram and the UOA I did was not as good as others I have had done on other vehicles in the past using RP. It wasn't bad per say but it should have been better.

The engine was still breaking in though( high silicone from gasket material detected in addition to obvious break in high metal #'s )so I fully expect a huge improvement on the next UOA at 20K. The oil tested ran for like 8 months and was in there from 9K-15K.

Every engine responds different to oils. It may be this truck of mine just doesn't like RP? Time will tell. Overall it is excellent oil though and a good oil to at least try. Try it and see how it goes.

You can get Royal Purple oil from clubrsx.com for $85 shipped per 12 quarts. Comes out to $7.08/qt. I have been running Royal Purple in my transmission, front and rear diff and of course 5w20 motor oil for my 2009 Acura TL. I also use their oil filter. They make top notch products. Just look at the picture below. I challenge anybody that knocks Royal Purple to show comparable proof of it not being a great product. Sure it shears and shows high wear on UOA's but I have learned UOA's don't tell you the whole story sometimes.

Thanks again, this is a great place for learning about oils for sure! I already changed out my transmission fluid and differentials, I have only had the truck for a month It's a 1997 Dakota and it's got 125K no leaks and runs really strong.
