Found a really old bottle. Let's say 4/5 years. Who knows maybe older bottle of royal purple unopened in my workshop from my tuner days lol

Will this be okay to use in my riding lawn mower and generators.

Read on a post that it could become acidic after sitting. Don't know if that's true and that's what I'm here. :)

I've reached out to Royal purple and I'm waiting to hear back but thought I'd also ask here in case I get a marketing reply.

Thanks all!

I’d use it if it were stored in a climate controlled, dry place. If stored in a humid place subject to high variations in temperature, I’d use it as a flush oil.

It was underground for millions of years. I think it will be OK. (y)
.. but what if those last 4 years are what did it and now its expired lol

Thanks everyone for the replies. Did not even wait for Royal Purples reply, and I have started oil changes.

Btw, if customer support says something different. I'll come post here so we can have a good laugh.

I've emailed them in the past and gotten no reply 🤷

Crude is full of water and solubles. It changes chemistry dramatically over time. Those are not OK qualities of engine oil. Engine oil can absorb water and drop solutes out over time. Not good - it’s why the conditions of storage matter.

No, it wasn’t.

It’s Royal Purple - so, it came out of a chemical factory 5 years ago. The stuff that went into said factory 5 years ago may, or may not, have come out of the ground.

That said, I would shake it up and use it.

Lake Speed Jr had a couple of videos about this. I won't summarize any claims in the videos because some people here get real salty any time he's mentioned

#1 EXPIRED: When Does New Oil Go Bad?
#2 LAB RESULTS: Does Motor Oil NEED To Be Shaken BEFORE Use?

In his test, he mentions the “cutting edge oil that wins in NHRA and NASCAR” that he, Lake Speed, Jr. supplies to his race team.

Comes in a 5 gallon pail. Shown at 15:22 in the video.

Logo sure looks familiar…

I'd shake the oil and use it. Years ago Blackstone tested oil in sealed containers a lot older than 5 years and it was fine.

Darn it, I was waiting for someone to post baseless accusations against LSJr before pointing that out

The max recommend age for old oil is 3 to 5 years so should be fine.
Beyond 5 years use it for flush oil, lawnmower oil, chainsaw bar and chain oil, ect.
Beyond 3 to 5 years the oils anti oxident protection degrades.
I would run it.
Last year or the year before I used an opened 20 year old Pennzoil jug that had wax buggers floating on top. Used it as lawn mower oil. That mower still runs fine.
