I had an interesting experience with some youths today. Thought I'd see what you think.

I had a Powerstroke Diesel (chipped, I'd guess) and 3 teengagers behind me on a highway in the south suburbs of the Twin Cities today.
They decided that they would like to play games and get within feet of my back bumper, etc -- typical kid stuff. Irritating, and yes, potentially dangerous.

They finally decided to get into the left lane and go by me. I offered the 1 finger salute. Their response was priceless.

They pulled back over into my lane, and decided to 'roll coal'. I've never seen a billow of smoke this large, and it lasted for at least 1/4 mile. Every car on this road freaked out - you couldn't see anything - it was like being in the worst fog imaginable.

Is this stuff happening with increased frequency? I'm curious to know what would have happened, if a cop was in the vicinity - are there ramifications to this behavior?

Was driving back home from an Autocross event across the state. MY two friends had miatas and some truck kept rolling coal in front of them. One of my friends got really [censored] lol.

I was sitting in traffic lately and noticed a truck deliberately slow down at.each intersection and then hit the gas to leave a cloud behind each time. Get a life.

Must be the newest white trash trademark. I always point, laugh, and make fun. A car that smokes is synonymous with a POS.

Duramax? EFI Live smoke tune.

As for law enforcement, Minnesota statute 169.47 would be applicable here - an officer could reasonably articulate the endangerment.

they were egging you on just to do it.when i was young and dumb we would fill up the secondary side of our quadrajet carbs with atf and play the same games. drive around till we irked some one then get infront of them and romp on it opening the back side of the carb and dumping the atf into the cyls.

My state says you can't smoke more than 4 seconds. The local cops likely don't know anything about the subject, but the Staties might.

Rolling coal to be seen is to hiding a train horn under your bed to be heard. Behavior only appropriate cruising the Best Buy parking lot during Black Friday.

While I have never done anything to rile another driver into acting like this, I have had idiots roll coal in front of me, just so they can show off their stupid truck.

Hopefully, MN law is better than Utah, but I don't think there is really anything that can be done in Utah. Utah does have a website where you can report another car that does not appear to be meeting emission standards. But I don't think diesels have to meet any emission standards yet.

First off, folks like that are like internet trolls. They are looking to provoke a reaction, like yours, to unleash rolling coal. Next time, ignore them.

Second, the folks who like to roll coal are going to be the death of aftermarket tuning (or cause a serious reduction in it) when the greenies decide they've seen enough.

And yes, a police officer can pull them over and the statute cited by Ramblejam is one area they could be cited.

I have a bunch of friends with built 6.0s, and yes I sold them all the parts needed to BulletProof them, and they roll coal a lot. Not excusing it, but lining up and doing a hard launch on a 7,000+lb truck and running an 11sec 1/4 mile is entertaining to say the least.

Idiot is an understatement. I'm amazed someone hasn't gotten the [censored] beaten out of them yet. Or hasn't been followed home and had their truck destroyed.

I know the finger shouldn't have been used. The reality of the situation is the stunts they were pulling behind my vehicle were putting me and others in a precarious situation.

A Camry vs a Powerstroke doesn't stand a chance in a rear-end accident.

Those posting locally know the traffic patterns on Cty Rd 42... on a good day, it bites.
