Been looking forward to this for a while.
Quick summary of the OCI:
- About 4 months and 4760 miles; I sampled early to compare with the previous UOAs, but that turned out to be a good thing with the TBN depletion.
- Driving was largely suburban roads and highway, with one ~900 mile road trip; some stop-and-go in summer heat.
- I have had a slightly heavier foot on cold starts lately (since they are not as cold during the summer); a fair bit of throttle but never over 2500 RPM until coolant is at operating temp.
- Lots of WOT, but not much redline on this run. I'm ashamed to say I rarely exceeded 5,000 RPM.
- Oil consumption is the lowest it's ever been with this car: about 1 qt/1500 mi. Motul 8100 X-Max 5w-30 matched this; every other oil I've tried fell far short.
Evidently fuel dilution was the worst it's ever been, which is likely one reason for the smaller remaining TBN and almost dangerously low flash point. Despite all that, this home-grown 0w-30 still managed to match or beat a race-bred big-name 5w-40 (Motul 300V) in a high-mileage engine that tends to prefer thicker oils. I will probably try the 5w-40 HD on the next OCI, but I think I'm pretty set on RLI for the foreseeable future.
What I'm not looking forward to is trying to look for and replace leaky injectors (the likely culprit for my fuel dilution) on a grad student budget. Ugh.
Anyway, report below. The current sample is the top row.
Previous samples, in order from top to bottom (click for threads):
Motul 300V 5w-40 #2
Motul 300V 5w-40 #1
Motul 8100 X-Cess 5w-40
Motul 8100 X-Max 5w-30 (original formula)
