So that's my little GM 3.1, knocking away.

I've tried all sorts of oils, thicknesses, additives. Nothing worked. 'Till I tried a quart of Rislone stuff, and it pretty much made this dreaded noise go away. Even at startup, there was barely any hint of the ticking/knocking you hear.

Problem is that this only lasted for a couple days (about 200 miles). After that, the noise was right back at it's usual.

Any explanation for this? Do you think the solution was in there and it helped the noise, but eventually burned off and now it's back to normal.

Have you tried AutoRX? It's not really an lubrication additive but it's a non solvent cleaner that will turn all your sludge and contaminants into a safe liqued. It works nice and slow and liquefy's sludge so you don't cloge your filter. I just that I'd give you that info because you don't have many posts so I'm not sure if you know about it. Also, I have had good luck with MMO, (Marvelous Mystery Oil) in silencing knocking. It's a slight solvent and Napathenic oil, but wont clean the sludge. However, your's is kind of bad, I would want to clean all your additives out with ARX and maybe try a synthetic oil after your phases and see if that silences. I just did a treatment that cleaned out a horrible additive that was making my wifes engine run like junk.

Yes I have tried AutoRX. Went thru 2 clean and rinse phases, and now currently running Castrol Syntec 0w30 oil (GC).

I think it's been slightly quieter and smoother since the AutoRX treatment, but like I said, the only thing that noticeably reduced (actually eliminated) the noise was Rislone. I also tried the MMO with mixed results.

So I just wanted to know more about this Rislone stuff, like what it contains and how it works. Since whatever is in it works for me, I want to try and use it more.

Wish you would have contacted me. You should be on the Auto-Rx Maintenance Plan. Your coating oil lubricating rotating parts with a thick petrolueum based product. You don't hear anything because it is muffled.Consider saving your engine from excessive wear and tear.Clean it again and go on maintenance plan.

Thanks for the tip frank. So the only difference between a what I'm doing now and the maintenance plan is the 3oz of ARX?

If so, can't I just put some in right now (200 miles after the oil change) and call it a maintenance plan?

Like I said, I did 2 clean phases (1500 and 2000 miles) and 2 rinse phases (2000 miles each) all with dino castrol gtx.

While I don't doubt that the ARX cleaned out my engine nicely, I'm still looking for something to lessen this noise. So far, ARX hasn't helped in that department, only that Rislone stuff.

Barring some special auto-rx-esque ester that doesn't show up on elemental analysis, Rislone is just thin oil with a smidge of an additive pack. It is thin, though. Perhaps the thin oil is just flowing better.

ARX does not coat anything it does not change your oil chemistry (doesn't thin it out) the 3 ounces our necessary to keep Auto-Rx Chemistry performing at same levels you attained after your final rinse. You don't have any Auto-Rx in your engine now.You finished cleaning application. Try going on the Auto-Rx Maintenance Plan (3 ounces with every oil change) and post results after 2 oil changes. You still have time to clean out the residue (without a full cleaning)
Don't feel we conveyed the proper knowledge to you previousle about maintenance plan.

I rest my case.

I am 1700 miles into the rinse phase, I took the car out tonite on a 100 mile run, took it out on Interstate 70 and ran it hard, before I used Auto-Rx and during the clean phase of Auto-Rx whenever I came home and parked the car you could here the engine making like a ticking noise whwn you turned the engine off for a minute or so, now 1700 miles into the rinse phase when I turn the engine off I cannot even here a sound. I guess any junk inside the engine is being rinsed off and more of the metal is being lubricated, I will be changing the oil filter soon to see how heavy it is, and if there is any junk inside.

AutoRX or anything else probably isn't going to fix that. You've either got a bad connecting rod bearing or a collapsed lifter/lash adjuster. Your engine requires mechanical repair, not oil additives.

How's the level in your coolant tank ? Have your intake gaskets been changed yet ?

The coolant level is good, I usually check that beacause I had a coolant loss problem in the past. Speaking of which, I did have my gaskets (forgot which) replaced about 20k miles ago because I was losing coolant and the engine would overheat.

That thang sounded like a Model T with a blower...engine technology sure has advanced over the years....

There is no dang additive/cleaner that will help with a 31-3400 GM v6 tick and keep it quite, you need new lifters i've replace 3 sets now, GM has a updated lifter that works great no more tick, done.

I agree too... that's kinda sounding like a really ---- of Volks diesel so you probably need mechanical repairs. And i also think it's sounding like lifters as it seems to be more of a ''pink pink'' than a ''klunk klunk'' like rod bearings do...
