ridiculous consumption of GDI engine oil 110k miles

Hello guys, how are you? I have a question and maybe you can help me. I have a 2017 Kia Rio 1.6l GDI engine and it literally swallows the oil. I even tried 10w40. There is no smoke from the exhaust. Is it normal for oil to burn without smoke? I will try Valvoline Max life 20w50 synthetic blend ($8 qt) sorry for my bad English, I live in Latin America haha

Primero, cambia tu válvula PCV. Luego ve a NAPA, Autozone o Advance Auto Parts, y compra dos latas de limpiador de válvulas de admisión CRC GDI. Siguiendo las instrucciones, rocía ambas latas dentro de la admisión mientras alguien mantiene el motor a 2500 RPM. Déjalo reposar durante una hora, luego condúcelo a velocidades de autopista durante diez minutos. Compra dos cuartos de galón de Techron Concentrate de NAPA y usa un cuarto por cada tanque lleno de gasolina. Después de usar dos tanques de gasolina con Techron, cambia el aceite del motor a Mobil 1 0W-40, y mantén un ojo en el consumo de aceite. Además, después de cambiar tu aceite, instala un captador de aceite. Mantennos actualizados si algo cambia. Si nada cambia después de todo este trabajo, entonces las paredes del cilindro en tu motor podrían estar rayadas y no hay nada más que puedas hacer. Mantennos informados sobre tu progreso y ¡buena suerte!

First, change your PCV valve. Then go to NAPA, Autozone, or Advance Auto Parts, and buy two cans of CRC GDI intake
valve cleaner. Following the instructions, spray both cans into the intake while someone keeps the engine at 2500 RPM.
Let it sit for an hour, then drive it at highway speeds for ten minutes. Purchase two quarts of NAPA Techron Concentrate
and use one quart for each full tank of gas. After using two tanks of gas with Techron, change the engine oil to Mobil
1 0W-40, and keep an eye on oil consumption. Also, after changing your oil, install an oil catcher. Keep us updated
if anything changes. If nothing changes after all this work, then the cylinder walls in your engine could be scored and
there is nothing else you can do. Keep us posted on your progress and good luck!

From everything I’ve read and discussed with pro mechanics, 1qt/1000mi is acceptable. I even had a mechanic tell me that some oil consumption shows the upper cylinder is being lubricated well. What you described is by no means acceptable. I haven’t had to deal with oil burners with exception of my old tractors. I think the root cause is low tension rings that don’t fit quite tight enough to properly seal against the cylinders combined with new oil formulation that during break in reduce proper wear in to fit the bore.

On the flip, we have this engine in an 08 Accent, and it uses virtually no oil. Maybe 1/4 qt/3k. We acquired the car @120k, now @145. Just run Mobil1 HMFS 5w30 and a Fram Ultra, no snake oils or anything out of the ordinary.

Thanks for the correction. I've been thinking it was the wrong thing, after doing some research into it. Our 2008 1.6L GDI is an Alpha II, apparently.

Based on the smell B-12 contains a whole bunch of toluene, which should be available at most hardware stores anywhere.

B12 is essentially a mix of different brake cleaners iirc. You could just spray a nonchlorinated brake cleaner into each cylinder.

Edit: didn't see that ingredients breakdown. So yep, that's exactly what it is lol
