I registered just to ask this one question. I saw the photos of torn PureOnes and thought maybe it was time for change. These are the filters amazon recommends for my Honda I4:

I'm leaning to the top one as it has best efficiency at 20 microns:

99 Mann
98.7 Amsoil
98 Fram ultra
?? Fram tough guard
98 Mobil 1
98 Purolator synthetic
97 AC Delco
95 Wix
?? Pennzoil Platinum
?? Bosch distance +
?? Baldwin
?? K&N performance
?? K&N pro series
?? Royal Purple

Fram Ultra is 99% and has the only dual layer synthetic media. All of the other synthetic filters only use one layer of media.

If you're not going to be pushing the filter to 15,000 miles though the TG is your winner up to 10k. The TG is also 99% efficient with ISO 4548-12 for anything greater than 20 microns.

Look at some used analysis Fram Ultras have some of the best ratings for filtration. Not all Mann filters are equal, but some are just as good as Ultras in the UOA section.

Your OCI will dictate which filter to use. Less than 10k the Mann is good, although some failures have been reported there also.

Above 10k I would definitely go with Amsoil, or maybe M1.

Fram Ultra! I am running it in my Honda I4 right now and it is doing the job just fine. Quiet starts and quick oil pressure (as it should be). They are good to 15K miles, and they are 99% efficient at 20 microns.

If the Mann or Bosch units for your application are us made, they are Purolators. (As are the Pennzoil branded filters.)

For now I'm going wix on my next round of changes.

The Wix made Carquest house brand filters look very good and are a bargain.
There's one cut open here after a really extended period of use and it looks very good.
Some of the Chinese-made house brand filters are also very well built. You can find some cut open here.
There may be a Motorcraft for your engine.
These are very good filters and very well priced.
Finally, there's always the OEM Honda filter which can be found online for cheap if you buy a decent quantity.
I don't think I'd worry too much about filtration efficiency, since most Japanese OEM oil filters have laughable efficiency, but are used on engines often noted for their long lives.
What did the Japanese engineers know when they wrote their oil filter specs that we're missing?
There's no point in going up a tier or two in searching for a P1 replacement unless you plan on extending drains well beyond what you'd do with a P1 or if you intend to use the filter for two drains.
The evidence on the street indicates that filtering efficiency may not be all that important.

I do frequent oil changes so my goal is maximum cleanliness not longevity.

For that reason I thought about sticking with PureONE since the tear probably happens long term, not a mere 7000 miles..... ..... Fram says 99% "greater than 20".... which probably means 99% at 25 microns (the next level in the standard test sample). So what is it at 20 micron?

Thanks :-)

Like I said Fram Ultras have the lowest insolubles ratings in most used oil analysis which indicates they are superior at filtering. I think they word it that was for legal reasons and it means anything at or above 20 microns.

Wix doesn't have the best efficiency but they hold up well in all the used cut open filters I've seen. That being said I occasionally have bought Wix in the past. If you are concerned about removing dirt/contamination from your engine I been Fram TG/Ultra are about the best.

The guy who was talking about Royal Purple was referring to the sale at jegs. Com where they sale filters. Royal Purple uses the most expensive synthetic media available, but still only single layer. Efficiency should be near the top but holding capacity is less than the Fram Ultra due to less overall media.

Since you noted frequently oil changes you would be under utilizing a synthesis filter like Royal Purple or FU, so I would recommend the Tough guard.

How many miles do you go on your changes? What is the application engine and filter? Driving style and climate?

Tough Guard would be my choice for a replacement for P1. Great filter, same price or better and readily available most anywhere with a 10k rating and 99% efficiency.

If you look at the statistics gathered here, many of the Purolators with tears have 5,000 miles or less on them.

See the link in the first post in this thread:
Purolator Tear Data

My theory is if a Purolator tears, it will happen not long after the filter is installed.

This has been hashed over many times here. "Greater than 20 microns" essentially means @ 20 microns. 20.001 microns is greater than 20 microns.

If you are going to do over 10K OCIs, just go get the Ultra.

He's being economical with his words. He recommends purchasing a Royal Purple brand oil filter from Jegs and taking advantage of their offer of free shipping.

At least it doesn't have blow-outs like that FRAM does.

Sounds like he gave you the part number, too-although Amazon has been a cheaper source of RP filters for me.

The K&N Filters USED to be good, basically the same internals as an M1 Filter, just with a different paint/sticker job, and the one line(part #'s start with "HP-") has a 1" nut welded on the top for extra easy removal.

few months back, they started turning up "made in korea" and when cut open, just weren't the same as they used to be. if you can find one at a decent price, that still says Made in USA, it should be good.
