You might not believe me, but when I was selling retail auto parts a guy did the same thing. He came in with a few questions about changing his oil (after he did it.) Started with asking about exhaust smoke and hard starting after his oil change so I asked him about any additives that could have been in his old oil to keep it from smoking. Said he did not have any in the engine, but was concerned about how much oil his engine needed. After some confusion on "Refilling the oil" I asked him about the process he used to change his oil and all seemed ok until I asked him if he checked the oil level after he refilled the oil. He responded by saying he was concerned that he didn't fill the engine. So I asked him how much oil he put back in his engine and he said something like "I was told 5/6 quarts but it did not fill it up, so I got a box but it's still not full." That was 17 or 18 quarts and his car should have taken 5 or 6 at the most. Wow, he was thinking he needed more oil! Long story short, after draining it out and filling to the proper level he only had a small tick in the engine. I was surprised! He probably had a few gasket/seal leaks but I don't remember seeing him again. That was probably smart in his case as he didn't need to be messing around under his hood! I swear on a stack of bibles this is a true story. I could tell you many more about automotive ignorance...one that comes to mind is a guy trying to buy an "Engine key" for a truck with a "Locked engine." Ah the joys of retail.
