Remedy for running after out of gas

What are the common things to do after running out of gas so a car runs the same as before?

As long as it is a gasoline engine you just fill it up and go.

And why is that ?

You have to prime it if its a diesel. On my old diesel Mercedes it had a pump on it to get the air out.

ive seen our tech take about 4-5 hours with about 20 gallons of diesel to get a 6.0 to prime.

Many newer diesels have a system that automatically bleeds the air (I believe it's a return-based system) which prevents the fun associated with running a diesel empty. A buddy of mine (heavy diesel mechanic) was telling me about them.

Probably just refill with fresh fuel.
A possible problem is that the fuel pump ran dry and it wore internal parts . Also, misfires can cause a catalytic converter to puke. This is one reason why mfrs. have a low fuel light come on when there are 2-3 gallons of fuel left.
But a one time event is most likely something that will be OK.
