Do you have to deal with regulators when you drive on the freeway? I call the people that drive line-abreast with others at the front of a pack of cars, regulators. Today on I-15 in the San Diego area there were four cars, side-by-side going exactly 65mph with many cars piling up behind. This went on for miles. The normal flow in this area is 75-80mph except when the traffic is very heavy. People were tail-gating and a lot of people were jumping between lanes trying to do anything to get by. The pace actuall showed down to 60 and after about 15 miles a kid in a pickupo passed between the fast lane and the center barrier. Do these regulators get points for causing all these problems on the freeways. After the **** broke the traffic went back to 80mph and things went back to normal as one regulator moved over and everyone started pouring through. Sometimes a regulator goes it alone and gets into the fast lane making everyone go around, but today it was team work that got the job done.

A couple of weeks ago I was on US15 in MD headed to PA.

Toyota Camry (with VA tags) in the left lane going about 5 over.

Honda Pilot (also with VA tags) who apparently wanted in front of the Camry.

What did the Pilot do when the Camry finally moved over after 15 miles?

Drove right next to it for the next 10 miles.

Is there some unwritten rule that drivers have to drive like retards when out of state?

I've seen MD and DC drivers do the same crap on I66 in VA.

People like that should be dealt with harshly. I recommend jotting down their personal information (make model tags) waiting a few weeks, tracking down their address and harrassing them at home.
There's no better time to start thinking about the road than before you're on it.....

People in DE use the fast lane for cruising all the time... even if someone is going steady or faster in the slow lane. SOOOOO annoying.

I sincerely hope that comment was made off the cuff and not seriously. Tracking down their address? Harrassing them at home? Sounds like a pretty sick idea to me

Some of the "left lane bandit" behavior is due to passive-aggressive behavior. Some doing the deed know the affect of their behavior.

However, I think most are just the typical ignorant sheep infesting society unaware of themselves, their surroundings, basically brain dead with the vast majority of their thoughts based upon their miniscule universe that generally consists of what is on TV that night and what sale at the store is on this week.

Toss in a lack of training and self-centeredness and you see idiots poking along, impeding others when there is nothing other than the driver's behavior making them place their car/truck so as to impede traffic flow.

As another poster mentioned a few months ago..... an observation I have witnessed and pondered myself.........

There must be some unknown magnetic force that draws vehicles close together. Even if there is plenty of space on the road vehicles pack together...... brought together by the relentless tug of that unknown magnetic force!!!!

Another reason for left lane banditry, especially amongst the majority who are mentally inferior, is what I refer to as the "pack instinct."

Humans are a pack animal. We naturally band together akin to wolves and lions. We are not a lone critter like many of the big cats who typically only interact with other adults when breeding or fighting over territory.

Driving down the road, plenty of room to spread out to maximize safety, you typically see the majority of idiots bunching together, often so closely that one wrong move or sudden problem leads to a scene reminiscent of a bumper car ride at the fair.

I have had other drivers catch up with my lone-travelling truck slow down and drive close by. I slow down and most go back to their original speed and depart. However, the dumbest of the dumb will also slow down, trying to instinctively form a pack, a herd of cars travelling at velocities nature did not intend our bodies to move at.

Yesterday, one of the blithering idiotic imbeciles reached me and slowed down. Happens all the time. Made me mad so I slammed on the brakes (no one behind me) and slowed from 55 to 40 mph. What did the idiot do? You're right!!!! Hit his brakes and dared his head around, looking for the reason to slow!!!!!! After realizing there was no reason I got the typical dirty look and the idiot sped up.

In days of yore the idiots were eaten by predators or killed by other humans. Nowadays, there is nothing to cull the unfit from the herd.

We are stuck with the idiots.

What a shame.

You are correct, obbop (and I do not normally agree with your positions). There is no mechanism to cull the unfit from the herd. Instead, we establish laws to give rights to the unfit. I know it is politically uncorrect, but there are some that are unfit to survive, including many in NO.

Whay do we go to great lenghts to help the unfit to survive? Why do we pass laws that give the unfit unalienable rights to breed?

So, who's gonna be the judge of who's unfit and should be "culled", you? What if you're one of those designated unfit?
It's nice to know there are so many pefect people around, how do you guys do it?

How about:

A law where if someone is impedeing traffic you video them with timestamp, speed, plate number and the idiot driving, and be able to turn that in to traffic enforcement for a cut of the fine.
That would straighten out these types of drivers double quick, especially when the word would get out, anyone could be a potential video enforcer.
This could also work with car pool lane jumpers, on ramp metered lane jumpers, and any 'all about me' drivers out there.

Sounds like we have one group of people who want to ignore a certain law(the speed limit) complaining about another group who make it inconvenient for them to do so, while they themselves may be breaking another law, assuming it is, in fact illegal to drive in the left lane if they're actually driving as fast as the law states they may.
Reality: this has always gone on, and always will, why get your blood pressure up over it?

*An unrealistically low speed limit can actually lead to crashes. Here’s why:

* First, many studies conducted over several decades in all parts of the country have shown that a driver’s speed is influenced more by the appearance of the roadway and the prevailing traffic conditions than it is by the posted speed limit.

* Second, some drivers will obey the lower posted speed while others will feel it is unreasonable and simply ignore it. This disrupts the uniform traffic flow and increases crash potential between the faster and slower drivers.

* Third, when traffic is traveling at different speeds, the number of breaks in traffic to permit safe crossing is reduced. Pedestrians also have greater difficulty in judging the speed of approaching vehicles.

*Adapted from the Institute of Transportation Engineers District 10, Traffic Information Program Series

Do you think that regulators score points for how many cars they hold up? It's a tough job being out there showing others how to behave. There must be some kind of reward for such work. Slower traffic should keep to the right, unless you are more important than others around you then it's ok to poke along and keep to the left. Important people like regulators have the right-of-way and it's part of their job to exercise that right. I would just like to have one of them respond and tell us the inside story.

I caught a secretary in my department doing this 25 years ago. When I asked her why, she responded that no one should be driving above the speed limit.

I pointed out to her that there may have been people behind her on their way to a hospital or responding to some other emergency.

She said she hadn't thought of that. Many people do not consider all possibilities.

Sometimes I am guilty of following too close ... but the only time I follow too close in slow traffic is to keep people from jumping in front! And even this isn't really justified; IE it's better to leave lots of space and let people cut in front if they really want to. After all, another 5-10 mins added to drive is not going to matter much in the grand scheme.

If I could put it into words, I would write a book and make loads of money.

The law is the law. If the signage says 65mph, you have absolutely no right whatsoever to go any more than 65mph and shouldn't expect the priviledge to be granted to you. If one exceeds the legal maximum speed, and causes an accident, and if such is detected through either the car's event recorder, or through physical accident scene investigation, the driver is open to not only criminal liability, but also tort liability as the result of negligent and illegal behaviour.

I typically set the speed limit, and lock the autothrottle to it. Sometimes the autothrottle setting and my driving will put me in the left lane right next to a car that is doing the same. Some idiot driving behind me at 20% above the legal maximum speed shouldn't force *me* to burn more fuel to accomodate his/her wasteful and illegal driving habits.

As for cars exceeding the speed limit, thats what red flashing lights are for. If people don't like speed limits or the laws, or don't feel they are reasonable, then they should exercise their priviledge at the ballot box to elect people who see things their way. See, for example, the State of Montana.

That's called obstructing traffic.

I'm reminded of a Mexican's joke, "Lets get some other guys together with 3 or 4 more cars and tomorrow morning hit the Ventura side by side at 35 MPH, that will really **** off the man he got jobs to get to, we don't"

It's illegal to use the fast lane when not overtaking down here.

Two people at work have been fined ($150?) for doing it in the last month.

Now we just need a law that stops people braking, and doing U-Turns without indicating or checking mirrors...oh wait, we've got that. Maybe mandating a self preservation instinct.
