The verdict is in on the Redline SL1 for my 4-Runner. The stuff did wonders! I was getting before the treatment 12.5 to 13 MPG in the city, OUCH!!

Vehicle specs call for 15 city, 17 highway. I ran one tank, 10 gallons to 1/3 the bottle of additive a week prior to the trip to the Northeast. I did a complete fill up and added the remainder of the bottle immediately before the trip. The gas used was 87 octane. The results were 22.5-23 MPG on the highway and I am back to 15 in the city! Seems like a huge spread though. I will check my mileage again after this fill up and see if I am still getting 15. Anyhow the results speak for themselves.

My father and I both use a bottle of Red Line SI-1 at every oil change to insure a clean system. We also *only* use Chevron with Techron gas.

This application was probably the 1st time an additive was used in the fuel. I plan on every 4000-5000 mile treatments.

Amkeer, I am not surprised by your testimonial. I use the same stuff, 1-2 ounces in a tank of 12 gallons, once each month as a preventative against moisture accumulation as well as combustion deposits.

Bogatyr on this site had an 80s VeeDubb Rabbit which was giving him lousy economy (~24mpg?) and 1/3 of a bottle of the Red Line SI-1 and he was over 30mpg.

I've also used Chevron Techron and now use Schaeffer Nuetra 131 ... but both as preventatives. I can't be sure of their effectiveness on my own.

Wow that's a great increase! Your injectors must have been gummi and spitting.

To be honest, I used to use lots of fuel additives. Not one of them, including full bottles of Redline, Amsoil PI, Chevron Techron, BG-44K (or even mixes of three kinds!)did a thing to increase my mileage. But the weird thing is that I can use different brands of gas and see MPG differences - so is it a BTU thing or an additive thing for me?

I've tried alot of different cleaners too. Cheveron Techron wasn't bad but the Redline is the one I'm sticking with. I get my gas at the same place all the time,(Sunoco), 92 octane. My mileage on a 95 Toyota 22RE was always around 18mpg. After the first Redline run it went to 22mpg and has stayed there for months. Redline also says to add a little at every fillup for maintanence, and thats what I do. It's marked on the bottle how much to add for each 10 gallons.

Rando, I was thinking of a maintenance dose of once a month or so to maintain the cleaning. I guess I will do that instead of every 4000 miles or so.

Pep Boys closed over here so I will have to find a new place to buy it!

I am a big believer in fuel additive for the reasons stated and others.

Keeps the injectors clean so fuel mileage never suffers.

Lubricates the fuel pump. (diesel)

Keeps the piston top clean of carbon so you do not have to up your octane.

I can use the cheap stuff and know that the 5 cents per gallon I am saving over Chevron is put to better use in the additive I add.

I use Amsoil PI for my gasser and alternate Amsoil diesel fuel concentrate with Stanadyne in my diesel.

Not sure which is best for the diesel.

Pablo, Bror, definitely agree the injectors were gummed up! I must have run some bad gas in there or it just accumulated over time.

I can't figure out the huge spread with highway and city, its got me baffled. I like the chevron gas too.

I have co-workers who think I'm an anal retentive, spendthrift nut for what I put in my car. They wouldn't ever bother with a $5 per pint additive.

These are the same people who pay to have the professional cleaning done (at $100-150 per shot every couple of years or so) and then all that gunk blowing through the motor and exhaust ruining/clogging O2 sensors, EGR valves, etc ... necessitating replacement. $$ Cha-CHING!!$$

I use no more than $20 worth of that stuff per year. But who can be bothered wasting money additives?

Pablo, are you running the same gas for several successive tankfuls Did you notice a significant trend with each one? Fill-up is terribly imprecise and unless you have a large sample size of tests (tanfulls) you are unlikely to get an accurate idea of what's going on.

My fuel economy seems to be constantly up and down ... until I look at the long term average which has always been 28.3mpg in 50/50 mixed highway and city.

Either way, I bet the different fuels are affectibg your ignition/knock sensor differently and that's the cause of the fluctuation. Might be slightly different octane, contamination, environmental formulation additives used in different counties, etc ...

Bror - I suspect you are correct for the recent one tankful. However, two years ago I did like a one year study between 76 and Chevron (we didn't have Shell, then). Chevron was like 2 mpg higher, and as I recall the grouping was tight but I can't remember when I ran a f-test and t-test if the mean and the s.d. were statistically significally different. Tonight I'll dig for the data.

Pablo,

Two years ago, 76 was a Tosco gasoline; these days it's a ConocoPhillips product, still coming out of the Cherry Point refinery, I assume, but who knows if the blend is the same.

Shell was Equilon then, now it's Motiva, still the same Anacortes refinery but different business partner (now Saudi Refining)...don't know how closely the final products relate. Shell's now advertising their new gasoline formulation in our area and rebranding the old Texaco stations to Shell unless there's another Shell station very close by. I like the fine print on Shell's advertising about how wonderful their gasoline is...how it has so much more good stuff in it---compared to the absolute minimum the law (EPA) requires!

Interesting results! Thanks Pablo!

I will have to stick with the Chevron gas. My last fill up was with Exxon and my MPG suffered. We don't have 76 here so I can't try it. I just filled up with Amoco so we will see what that gives.

Interesting is I've used the Redline injector cleaner cause I felt I had some fuel burning problem so I went with two straight fill ups at full dose. I didn't see any difference so I tried the Lucas UCL and can feel a lot smoother and responsive engine. There is more pep and tried a lower octane gas and it performs ok...a little pinging. I've trusted Redline injector cleaner but think the Lucas UCL is performing something my engine response to. Will try the Fuel Power next with such good reviews on it, and cheaper than the Lucas....

You can buy a gallon of the Lucas Upper Cylinder Lube at NAPA for $20.

Mamala Bay, I was in Advance Auto yesterday picking up an air filter and I was looking to get something else and was momentarily torn between UCL and SI-1 ... then it hit me:

I've had great luck with SI-1 keeping fuel systems clean ... and have seen it work wonders on clogged-up cars. It was also $6 per 12oz ... with the Lucas UCL being $3 for 5.25oz. So, the choice (for me) was obvious.

"You can buy a gallon of the Lucas Upper Cylinder Lube at NAPA for $20."

Thanks SSDude! My gallon of Neutra 131 is almost gone so I might just try it at that price.

I'm also interested in trying Fuel Power. So many additives, so few toys to try them in ...

Yup I am sold on the continuous doses of Lucas UCL. I run about a little less than 2 ounces per 10 gallons, maybe 1.5. This is used every tank. I have been using it since last year with good results. It seems to reduce ping and quiets the injectors. It also smooths out the throttle response. I just picked up a quart for $7.99.
