Actually... Guess what???

These stupid cameras are contracted out... At quite a cost at times. In the Richmond and Petersburg area there are a number of these lovely red light ticket machines .. well lo and behold the monthly contract paid the company 14,000 dollars a month... Well once people became "safer" aka less people running those lights... Less $$$ coming in... The lovely state decided to hasten the change from yellow light to red lights... To get more money... Because they were running short of the money needed to pay the third party contractor who they had hired to do the whole process... yeah.. this is a boondoggle for cash... For people involved in this whole garbage process.

There are quite a few streets around here that are downright dramatic to stop on for a red light. They are either timed so every time you leave a green light, you will be facing a really short yellow at the next intersection, or they simply have super short yellows that may as well never happen. If you don't know what's about to happen, you end up using a lot of brakes to stop in time, even doing the speed limit.

Result? People who know these roads go stupid fast on them to beat the next light, or they are flying through an intersection at 70 in a 45.

There's quite a few intersections where the lights mysteriously never go green long enough to empty the turning lanes. Not even half. But there sure is a red light camera waiting to see what happens.

I don't need a program that responds to safe intersections by doing everything it can to make it less safe.

That's like a Fire Department handing out space heaters and shag carpet to help with a winter slump in calls.

^^^^^^^^

Exactly right.

You know MCompact was a judge, right?

That's where I'm confused too--I thought those things carried the weight of law.

Not where I live. The ticket looks official and it has a lot of threatening language on the back, but it is all unenforceable. It doesn't go on your license or your insurance, there is no warrant (even though the ticket tells you there can be) and it is illegal to send the ticket to collections (even though the ticket tells they will).

The first time I got one (on a drastically shortened yellow, I'd call it borderline unsafe) I called my lawyer - and he told me to put it in File 13 and never think of it again. Told me to call him back if they started to harass me.

No Sir, just saying that being prudent is not bad.

Does that apply to speed cameras too?

I think it takes 5 unpaid red light tickets from the city of Chicago before they notify the IL Secretary of State and you won't be able to re-new your license. It doesn't matter who is driving the car either, the owner is responsible for all tickets. They don't have as many in the low income neighborhoods because I think they realize that most people won't for the tickets anyways.

We don't have either red light or speed cameras in Kentucky; the companies that run those scams don't want to be involved with the court system at all- it might expose them to too much scrutiny. Like others have mentioned, the scammers make all manner of threats to coerce their victims to pay up, but in all likelihood nothing will happen.

You ever drive on the Dan Ryan expressway? I've driven throughout the U.S. and never experienced dangerous driving like on the Dan Ryan. It's like the speed limit doesn't exist on that stretch!

Too many times. The only good times where during the night or up to 5am (If no nightly construction involved).
I could live with the various Actual lane speeds.
But the sudden stops.....And no shoulder in the left lane.... I just had to make sure I had enough space in front for stopping.

I think the logic is pretty simple:
You have people from IN, WI, and IL-NON-Chicagoland, who actually try to go places and are used to driving 70+, while the posted speed is 45.
on 294 people will do 70-80 on a posted 55.

Short version for people not from the area:
-after more than 10 years driving that highway + surrounding area, I cannot make a pattern or reason for it or not it: one day you can be moving at 60 in all 4-5 lanes, one day all lanes + 2-3 express lanes are stop-25mph
