Ram 1500 Diesel

Not a good idea. Ram 1500 already has the lowest payload in the class and that's without the heavy Diesel option. And the fuel economy is not that great at all.

Over $57K is a lot of money for a 1/2 ton pickup. I'm sure the diesel will haul just fine, but are the tow ratings the same as the 5.7 Hemi? As itguy08 mentioned, they already have the lowest tow ratings in their class. If I were ever in the market for a diesel pickup, it would be so I could tow more than a gas engine AND achieve better fuel economy.

No.

What's the base price of an equivalently equipped ga$$er?

Heavy?

We’re told the total added weight to the truck over an identically equipped Ram 1500 with the 5.7-liter Hemi V-8 is less than 50 pounds, but the added cost for the diesel option over an identically equipped Hemi Ram will be $2,850 (but expect the upgraded transmission to be another added cost).

I would assume they will put the diesel into the lower trim levels, so probably in a year or two, you'll be able to get a diesel for low mid 30's.

Base price: $48,730????? That can't be right??

Is that the base price of the "Laramie Longhorn" edition they tested?

Who are they marketing this to? I can't imagine the people who need a truck for towing buying it, the article said that it was "sluggish" with a small boat and trailer. Plus the "I got a diesel" status guys won't go for it either, I can just hear it now: "Yeah, it's a diesel but it's just a little six-banger. Ain't no real truck".

Unless the MPG CRUSHES an equivalent gasser, they're not going to sell many, even at a lower price. The difference in cost between gas & diesel is way too big, approaching $1/gallon in these parts.

VM Motori again.

I didn't think their diesels met US standards. Jeep equipped some Liberties with VM Motori diesel 4 cylinders. More horsepower than the 2.4 and a LOT more torque than the 3.7

Don't know why Jeep didn't put it in the Wrangler. I'm sure they would have had a few takers.

Didn't matter. They were gone sometime around 2008.

Seem to be a decent diesel engine maker. They use them in London taxis.

In the article they said its 50lb heavier and about 2850$ more.

if it gets 25mpg vs 19 that might be doable.

you have to keep in mind who was testing the truck and take some of their "sluggish" comments with a grain of salt.

If you are flogging a hemi pulling that trailer you are gonna get about 5mpg.

The thing going to bite into the fuel savings is the 8 gallons of urea per 10000miles, OCI of 10000miles(how many quarts eh?)
and the higher cost of diesel fuel about 10-15% higher here
3.89 vs 3.40 currently.

DEF(diesel exhaust fluid) seems to cost about 15$ for 2.5gallons.

Another question.. does this DEF freeze? I was reading about an operating temp of 12F..

That all said I would have paid 2500$ for a diesel option for my forester.

The fleets would eat those up if they put it in a regular cab, 8ft bed truck and priced it $2k more than a gas job. About $22k.

I like the concept.

I'm surprised it doesn't make more torque than the ecoboost...

I hope they sell all they can build, but I'm concerned "VM" won't get the same reception as "CAT" (Or Cummins or Detroit or even International) might get.

I do hope it is successful because it will mean that Ford and GM will probably wade in...

But Chrysler was the only one who did that.

When GM was using the 6.2/6.5 Detroit Diesels, you couldn't find Detroit anywhere on it. (I doubt they would emblazon the Duramax trucks with "Power By Isuzu"...don't think that'll sell no matter how well Isuzu builds a diesel)

Ford saw the sales of the Cummins take off and still hid the IH/Navistar sticker under the hood. (Doesn't work with the current 6.7 engine..."Power by Ford With Heavy Design Input from AVL of Austria" not really a selling point)
