So I drove over to my friends house earlier this afternoon, and found him busily applying Rain-x to his quarter panel.

Yes, the quarter panel.

He had already finished the front half of the car.

Of course I asked him what in the world he was doing, and this was his reasoning. "Dude, if Rain-x can 'polish' and bead water on my windshield, why can't it do the whole car? I mean, if this works, I save like seven bucks on some wax, man!" I just kinda stood there while he finished up.

Any ideas as to what's going to happen to this car? It's a black 1984 Camaro.

I wouldn't think it would last nor protect nearly as long as any decent wax. How is he saving money? Waxes aren't very expensive.

Ive used it on black mouldings and headlights, not to mention glass inside the house, like shower doors. It puts a haze and discolors paint, if I'm not mistaken it says NOT to put it on painted surfaces. Now one can do the other way around and use wax on their windows and glass and it will sheer off water just fine.

Would this have been perhaps shortly after 4:20?

I imagine this car has a large "3" on the doors?

Rain-X is primarily silicone and alcohol. While I don't think it will hurt the paint, I can't imagine the car looking good after a couple of rainstorms and car washes.

If he is that cheap, tell him to go to Big Lots for car wax. I saw some Eagle One spray wax the other day for about $3.00. At least that stuff is made for car paint.

No, no mullet, but I DO think he is considering buying a "3" and some GM Goodwrench decals. I think he does have a 2/18/2001 memorial somewhere, too. Dale Earnhardt is from about an hour down the road and Teresa is from the neighboring town.

Thanks for the replies, pretty much figured there was a downside to it. Myself, I'm too poor to be cheap.
