hey guys it's 3am and I just got woken up to raccoons going though my trash, I knew we had raccoons in the area. I have seen them before so I looked out my window and there were 4 HUGE! ones and a smaller baby. I tried to bang on the window and shout and that did nothing other then get a stupid look...soo I grabbed the febreeze (it was close by) and sprayed them and they ran off I guess they don't like the smell of vanilla and almonds haha

anyways is there anyway I can keep these out of my yard? I've already placed on of my old rims but they just knocked it off

Taste like chicken.

You live in this n.o.w. and this is your first encounter?

You are correct, the large males seem about the size of gorilla up close and personal, like in my face in the garage. Usually a bit of loud noise is all it takes, but I've resorted 3/4" pipe, 1" PVC, ratchets, .22 zimmer patrone, wrist rockets, Chancho.....whatever is handy.

We had a raccoon relocate into our attic so I closed the entry point and put a trap to catch the guy. For three days he tried to get out but didn't get into the trap. The poor thing actually cut his hands trying to remove the seal where he had come in. I then removed the seal, he left and I closed it after him.

The lesson is that these guys are smart because after three hungry days I would probably be tempted to get in the trap after those delicious peanut butter covered cat food snacks and the can of sardines.

Other than that I leave them alone. I have started feeding them and the possums - leave some dog food out for them. Life is already tough in the nature plus I like the little 'wildlife' that we have in the neighborhood.

Use a lockable trash can that they can't get into. They'll find easier food at the neighbors and leave you alone. Is there a way to screw on a latch to your existing trash can? It doesn't literally need to have a lock but just something they can't undo themselves.

I can't help liking raccoons!
But they are noisy, destructive, and sometimes belligerent.
One raccoon against a dog can do a lot of damage - imagine what 2-4 could do!

You have to make the food they are looking for unavailable, and also seal up places they may want to live in.

Toronto is doing a compost collecting program that'll hopefully put these fat critters on a weight loss program. If the trash doesn't have any edibles, they have no reason to break it open.

We have a cherry, apple, two plum trees and a green belt around our area, so we've lots of critters over the years, including lots of racoons. I always smile and remark 'there goes trouble' when I see three young ones head into the nieghborhood. We don't see them as often now that we've got a dog, a fast one at that (a Borzoi, kind of a large, hairy greyhound), but I still see smaller ones around once in awhile. We keep our trash cans indoors so we don't have problems with them making a mess. I'd think twice about chasing several away with a stick, as they can get big and pretty mean.

I don't think the raccoons eat any of the fruits from the trees in my yard. But the groundhog that lives under the barn likes to eat the zucchini in the garden. the squirrels like the berries...

So it's a contest as to who gets the good stuff. Since these guys patrol the area regularly for goodies, we usually lose. :)

The local raccoons around my place don't annoy me at all. Nightly visits to the dumpster, so what?
Once or twice a week I encounter one or two when I'm out walking. Nobody gets excited, and nobody gets hurt.

My only real worry is the rare one that's infected with rabies. Might be easy to confuse the accustomed to humans beligerent one, with the just beginning to go rabid one.

Only real worry personally is the after dark walk with the house dog when there's a definite whiff of skunk in the yard. Not dangerous (other than the remote threat of rabies), but darn it take a LOOONG time for that odor to fade!

My parents use cable with a lock on it to keep them out of the trash. That has done the trick for years now.

If getting rid of the raccons is required, shoot them. A well placed bullet is more humane than poison IMO.
