Quieting a noisy Subaru EJ25 engine...

I tried both Ultra 5w30 and GTX 10w30...Both were just pretty good.

Ultra 5w20 was excellent but it looks like SOPUS reformulated since I tried it. SOPUS will eventually reformulate the PYB 10w30 and ruin it...You know they will

I am sure it could use a set of plugs and wires at least. It does have new exhaust gaskets which quieted it down a lot. It will be traded in on a 2015 Outback this Fall. She was going to get a new Forester but decided it was not roomy enough.

Even the K24, the roughest four cylinder Honda I've ever driven, is a model of refinement next to any of the three Subarus we've owned.

The K24Z3 in my 2011 is very smooth. Even at the 7300 rpm fuel cut off. I never get any four cylinder vibes in the cabin, even at hot idle with the A/C on.

All of my friends Subaru's have had a more mechanical sound than most engines. Kind of like all of the valves are out of adjustment. My neighbors Forester has really loud piston slap. I swear someone is hiding under his car and hitting the block with a hammer when he starts it in the morning. Engine is fairly quiet when warm. Subaru seem to be rather quirky for a fairly mainstream Japanese manufacturer. I would own one if the head gasket issues didn't scare me away...

Only thing I've never like about a Subaru is the darn exhaust leaks! I don't think I've ever heard one that didn't leak unless it was brand new!! And that god awful exhaust note when you put aftermarket stuff on them, sounds like a Honda only running on 3 cylinders!

That Forester is a good candidate for my LexOIL(R)(TM) brew but I doubt it will help much with the Genuine Subaru Piston Slap(R)(TM).

The new 2015 Legacy and Outback models have NVH improvements...so they claim.

Us in the Subaru community call this "The Boxter Rumble" Not all subaru's have it, it depends on the difference in the header length from Bank to bank. I much prefer it to the sound of a modified Honda, which to me just sounds like a pist off weed wacker... to each his own...

Or the Hondas with the big coffee can exhaust that sounds like a bleating calf...The neighbor kid has one...It's embarrassing.

Thanks for the advise on the Outback...I am going to to do a bit of work on it to get it thru until Fall.

If you think that the K24 is smooth, try an old 2.3 or 2.2, either of which are smoother than the K24 but not as smooth as the old 1.5 liter Civic engines.
We've owned them all, so the only bias I have is that I favor Honda engines.
We've also had three Subarus, two 2.2s and a 2.5.
These engines are not nearly as smooth or quiet as any Honda, although the 2.2s have a more pleasant mechanical sound than does the 2.5. The NA Subies don't seem all that eager to accelerate either.
Just calling it like I've seen it.

So far Mobil 1 0w40 has been the best in terms of smoothness and overall quiet sounding. I've used PYB, M1 0w30/5w30 HM. I like the 0w40 a lot. I have almost 2k miles on it now and will sample again at 5k. My car also has a lot of miles on it, so the 0w40 is probably not ideal for a newer Subaru engine.

Any Honda? I have had a different experience, the 2.5 in my Subaru seems to have less vibration while idling at a redlight than my coworkers 4-cyl Accord. The 2.5 in my Legacy is DEFINITELY smoother than the VCM equipped 3.5 V6 in our '08 Accord, especially when the V6 was thumping along and fouling plugs. As for the acceleration, no argument there.
