I saw this on saaber1's sig and was wondering if there was more info on this somewhere? I've never looked at the cold operating temp of an oil this way before.

Quote:
"when 5W30 is cold, ...the oil is 35 weight (5+30),...20w50 starts at 70 and warms up to 50"

It appears to be a joke at someone else's expense. :)

It's a joke. There's an old thread on it. I believe the original poster of that quote was supposed to be someone who knew what he was talking about.

I think the original quote was borrowed from another board. It was equating the numbers to magnitudes of water equivalencies.

A 0w30 was thinner than water at (some) temperature and 30 times thicker at (some) temp.

It kinda reminded me of how my (at the time) 5 year old daughter explained how the bank must have a lot of money since it had 5 floors. When they get full on the 1st floor they build another one above it. She also said that it wasn't JUST a 5 story building, it was 5 whole books.

I got a good laugh out of that line the first time I seen it.
The funny thing is a lot of people wouldn't know any better, I didn't before getting hooked on this site.
